What about the message you are sending to your child. That the world is such a terrifying, dangerous place that the only way they can be safe is to be tracked electronically 24/7. Assuming the kidnapper doesn't put some tinfoil over the implant to block the signal.

Do you also tell your kid "the car is such a terrifying, dangerous place that the only way you can be safe is to be buckled up" - or do you just say "hey, junior, buckle up"?

Do you tell your kid "the world is such a germy, terrifying, dangerous place that we have to take you to get innoculated or else you'll surely die from some vile disease" - or do you just say "it's time to get your shots. let's go!"?

5.  We think it won't ever happen to our children. (if I thought that, I wouldn't have brought it up)

I still think this is the #1 reason.

HL, you have kids, right? Do you have fingerprints, current photos, stats (height, weight, hair color) and DNA profiles from your family? If not, let me know when you do...

I'm not busting your chops, but like I said, when it comes down to it, unless someone comes to your door and sells you this stuff, most people won't go out of their way to do it even if it were free.

"I know where my kids are 100% 80% 60% 40% 20% of the time."

I would never have taken it as you busting my chops.  You're above that.  (I'm not, but you are.  )

No fingerprints, but photos, stats and dna samples, yes.  I suppose we have tons of stuff that fingerprints might be able to be taken off of, but that's not a very fast or efficient process despite what they show on CSI.

I guess we just see it on different scales. To me, buckling up and getting shots are normal precuations you take, just like teaching your child not to talk to strangers or what to do if someone approaches them.

Tracking their every move every second of every day doesn't equate to "you're getting a shot so you don't get sick" to me, to me it equates to telling the child "everything in the world has germs that are going to kill you without this shot". The world is scary enough place without overblowing a risk that, while terrifying, is probably pretty small. Just my take on it.

Orrrr... you could just say "it's so mommy knows how to find you if she needs you" leaving out the 'every second of every day' part.

My thought was to hypothetically have it done when they're an infant and just leave it at that. No speeches necessary. If I need to find them at any given moment, I can. Easy. When they get older, like 12YOish, they can know more.

I would probably do it.  I don't know if I would want all their info on there, but more like a tracking device.  I know they have them now that you can put in the kid's backpack or belt, but those can just be taken off so easily.

I do have picyures, stats and fingerprints for my kids (but now you've reminded me I should probably have them somewhere I could find them because I'm not sure where they are right now!), but I never thought of getting their DNA.  What do you do - just cut some of their hair?  Do a mouth swab like on TV?

I agree with Renee, no reason to tell the kids they have a chip in the first place.  I guess if I got it on my 6 year old I'd have to tell her, but ideally this would be somethng you could do before they can even talk.  My daughter always asks why we can't bring things like knives on planes.  I don't tell her all about Sept. 11, I just say you're not allowed to have things that could be dangerous.  She accepts that answer for now.

Hangloose,

I still haven't heard you talk about the objection to someone having a reading device and using the information for bad things.  A pervert, a stalker, identity theft.

And you say you're rather have you kid back with a big hole in their neck,  if the guy gets the chip out, it would make it useless.  If this was a normal thing, criminals would just remove the chip, and make a worse situation.

Mandatory, definably not, voluntary, a little over the top, but your own choice.

LaurenSU02 - 2007-06-08 12:42 PM The last thing you need on top of someone kidnapping your child is having that kidnapper dig into your child's neck to see if he/she has one of those tracking devices installed. Ugh.

I've thought about this objection. I'd rather have my kid back with a wound in their neck than missing for four months and then turn up dead.

If a child is abducted and has a chip, why would that keep the abductor from doing whatever he/she was planning to do (that would result in a kid missing for 4 months and turning up dead?)

I dont think I see the relationship here.
