Sunny
Total Time = 1h 38m
Overall Rank = 225/296
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 18/23
Pre-race routine:

Stayed at the cabin of fellow BTer xH2Oskier. Woke up to a beautiful morning. Ate a clif bar, drank some HEED, checked my transition bag and ready to go. Hammer gel before the start of the swim.
Event warmup:

Nice little jog/warmup because I forgot my helmet back at the car. After setting up transition space, I donned the wetsuit and hit the water for a brief warmup to get used to the water temp.
Swim
  • 05m 53s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

Shallow water, ran the first 50 or 75 meters. Poor swim after that until I hit the turnaround. Got much better and found a little bit of a rhythm toward the end.
What would you do differently?:

More open water practice. More race experience.
Transition 1
  • 06m 7s
Comments:

22 out of 23 in T1. I really don't hustle much yet. I will get better and be more competitive.
What would you do differently?:

Hustle more, try to go faster. At this point I'm more worried about getting the socks on correctly to avoid blisters.
Bike
  • 53m 28s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 13.95 mile/hr
Comments:

Just too unsure of the road condition to really take advantage of the downhills. Only hit 37.8 as a max, could have easily hit 42 if I had more confidence. The roads weren't very smooth and the 2 miles inside the race track had some bigs bumps.
What would you do differently?:

Hammer the downhills more and drink less Gatorade. Water was the ticket for me. When Gatorade gets warm, it is to syrupy for me.
Transition 2
  • 03m 36s
Comments:

Again, I take my time too much. This could have been a lot better. Practice under race conditions would help. It was a long run from dismount area to my rack.
What would you do differently?:

HUSTLE!!!!!
Run
  • 28m 58s
  • 2.49 miles
  • 11m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Didn't have anything going on until the last 3/4 mile. At the point I really felt great. The hills were a surprise. It was tough for me because most of my training is flat.
What would you do differently?:

Train on hills more. Get to Tri Wisconsin clubs track workouts to gain speed.
Post race
Warm down:

Gatorade, bagels, oranges and bananas with other BTers. Cheered on the Oly Bt finishers as well as maggeyruth finishing her FIRST EVER triathlon! Very nice stretching session before I left transition area.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of serious training. This fun experience will definitely inspire me to work harder.

Event comments:

Nice race, great venue. Finally met many BTers. We had huge representation, literally and figuratively. We made for quite a picture with the height of most of the BTers. It was really exciting to see TriDDS win the Oly Clydesdale division. Big props to XH2Oskier for the hospitality. Congrats to all BTers!
