B-One - 2007-06-27 10:40 AM The B goes on the left cheek and the T on the right. Ought to be visible at quite a distance. I suppose I'll have to shave for this race!

You're probably going to get sick of everyone asking you what BoT stands for then aren't you?

That's just plain wrong.

So, I just e-mailed the RD to ask if he knew if there was a chance the lake would be too warm for wetsuits.  I was thinking maybe he had checked it or knew something about it from past history.  But he said "might be, might not be, prepare for both".  Okey dokey...

I might set a new slow OWS record on the course if I can't wear the wetsuit.  So I've got that going for me!

As far as the water being to warm, that will change over the next couple days. With the streak of 90's the temp went up, but with the cooler night the next 3 days it will be coming down. According to the USAT rules, they can't make the call on the wetsuits until 2 hours before the race. The water temp is suppose to be measured in 3 spots in the swim course, at a depth of 18" down from the surface, and they use the average. I hope it will be back down into the low 70's by Saturday morning.

Oh yeah, and as far as slow OWS records go, check out the Manitou tri results, and you will see someone with a swim of 79:29. He made up for it with a 21.8 MPH bike, and his run was at 7:47 per mile. I don't think you will be setting any OWS slow records on this course.

No worries, even if you would manage to set a new slow OWS record. I might be setting a slow run record myself. The torn cartilage in my knee has been bothering me, so I might end up walking a good share of the run *sigh* DFL > DNF > DNS

I am sure Bill Copenhagen is annoyed with me, but he sent this further response (which I thought was very nice and I feel better now):

Considering the shallowness of the lake it will always be touch and go.  I will not have a chance to get up there before Friday so it'll be  anyone's guess what the current water temp is. I will say this, the  USAT officials will do everything in their power short of rowing a  canoe to the center of the lake to get a temperature reading that is  below 78°. It is everyone's best interest for it to be a wetsuit legal  race.

Sorry, I cannot give you a more specific idea about water temp. To date, we've never had a non-wetsuit race, but the race is only in its third year.

Sorry to hear about your knee, Androgenie!

I don't think Bill is upset with you. I've met him while volunteering at the YWCA indoor triathlons...he's a good guy :-)

The knee is an old injury....tore cartilage by falling off a ladder when I was working at Target :-)

My, my.  I went for a bike ride today and look at all the fun I missed!

I went up to ride the Minneman course today with Triathlete Jr.  Let's just say it was a VERY slow ride.  His first time riding on the road and a fair bit of anxiety about it.  This from my kid who is absolutely fearless (not crazy, just fearless) about water sports...who'd have thought?  Anyway, on this lovely 14mph ride I was reminded how friendly the course is.  There is one "hill" that isn't really a hill, and you get a nice downhill leading into it.

Now, to my point for this post.  I looked all over for signs indicating swimmers' itch problems.  Nothing was posted and they had a bazoodle of YMCA camp kids in the lake.  We reasoned that if there was still a known problem they wouldn't have had all the kids in there.  Let's hope my logic works.

Second, I looked for a place to meet so we don't have to count on naked bodies.  (And I think I have to draw the motherly line on letting my kids draw the B & T on-site....) Anyway, as you stand in the transition area facing the bathroom building, to the right is a triangle of grass that separates the in & out to the parking lot.  There are a couple of really big pine trees there - you can't miss it.  Perhaps we could park ourselves there?  It allows us to see the t-area and the beach so we won't miss anything, and it's close to the bathrooms!

Oh, and while I'm on a roll, I now recall that this is the race where the sprinklers in the park were perfectly lined up with the porta-john line...you could shower while standing in line, and then, while in the porta-john, get rained on!

I'm just a little giddy today because my new bike just might be ready for Saturday and despite all the conventional wisdom about not trying anything new on race day, if it's in, I'm riding it!

You're right! The whole nudity thing probably wouldn't draw that much attention anyway.

Potential injuries on the bike with all those moving parts (bike parts as well) would be too great anyway. The blinding light off my untanned body may cause retinal damage to the other racers also.

The triangular area with the pine trees would be perfect.

Ride the new bike if you get it. Be prepared for shifitng irregularities. I can show you how to quickly solve those issues on the fly before race time.

See you there!

Saturday, June 30 at 8am
Temperature: 62°F

Dang near perfect conditions are forecast. Some may find it a bit chilly, but 60s are far better than 90s.

I know and have worked with Bill on other races before.  He is a great guy and really wants to put on a quality event.  The week before the race is pure bedlam for a race director.  If he might seem a little stressed that is it.  I am sure he has not been put off by any of the questions asked of hiim.

I don't want anyone to get the impression I thought Bill was stressed or anything other than nice.  It was just my Minnesotan self-deprecating "Oh I am sure he's tired of me know" kind of statement.  He proven to be nothing less than outstandingly nice and helpful.

Kris - THANK YOU for the course report.  It's nice to know about the bike course.  I really want to at least drive it and hope to head up there tomorrow since I have the day off (yay!).   Good luck with the bike.  I am sure you could take it for a quick ride when you get it to get used to it enough for the race.

The weather sounds truly awesome to me.   It will be welcomed by me because I could be racing as late as 10:30.

Thanks, Kris, for the bike course report. I'm always worried about hills since I rarely train on them, so I'm glad to hear there really aren't any.

See you all on Saturday at the pine tree/bathroom triangle!

Sorry, heading to my folks' house to drop off the two older kids for a week at Camp Grandparents. I wouldn't miss that for the world. For the week before my tri, I'll just have my husband and my almost 3 year old around... blissfully easy.

But you all go have fun!

Is anyone else doing the Timberman next weekend? Or am I on my own? If you aren't, you really should consider it for next year; it's a very nice race.

Good news for those nervous about wet-suits being allowed.  It states in the packet they are not allowed if the temp is over 78 degrees for those who want to win awards.  For those of us just competing the water temp can be up to 84 degrees.  I knew there was something like that, I just couldn't remember the exact rules.

How cool is it that our names are printed on our bib numbers? This is the first time (in my limited experience) I have seen that.
