Sunny
Total Time = 2h 23m 48s
Overall Rank = 116/118
Age Group = First Timer
Age Group Rank = 13/13
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast: Myoplex Strawberry Cream shake, 1 packet of Banana Blitz GU and a real Banana. Vitamins and water too.
Event warmup:

Walk around the event grounds.
Swim
  • 13m 38s
  • 711 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started off a little fast/sloppy. After I passed a few people, I settled into a good rhythm and just went to town, caught up to a couple of people that kept getting lost and losing sight of the buoys. All this while swimming the breaststroke too.
What would you do differently?:

Wetsuit and 'perfect' my freestyle stroke for next year.
Transition 1
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

It took a while to get into my socks and tie my shoes, but I just took my time and felt pretty good considering I didn't practice T1 as much as T2
What would you do differently?:

Bike shoes with no laces.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 18s
  • 16.5 miles
  • 12.98 mile/hr
Comments:

Started really well on bike. Weather damage to course required some last minute changes including adding a hill that was steeper than anything I've ever seen (I know, I'm whining). Kinda killed the rest of the ride, but all in all a good ride. Threw the chain twice and had to walk up the last bit of a couple smaller hills.
What would you do differently?:

Try to keep both of my lungs in my chest the next time I go up a big hill. Yell louder at the morons who where blocking as a serious hobby...
Transition 2
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

I practiced this transition a good bit, so everything went as practiced. I didn't run like a madman out of the transition area, just worked up to my jogging speed.
What would you do differently?:

Yankz! Which, by the way, were sitting in my mail slot when I got home.
Run
  • 48m 16s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 15m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt good that I only walked 1/3 to 1/2 of the run. Everybody was so great. It was an out and back course, so a lot of the runners that were on their way in were cheering those of us on the way out. I kept looking at my watch in surprise everytime I ran past a mile marker. I couldn't believe my average speed and how good I felt!
What would you do differently?:

Lose some weight so that I can run the whole thing and be faster...
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around, eat an orange, drink water and GU20.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My weight is probably the biggest thing. Something that I'm still working on and will continue to improve, it just takes time. I'm young and hopefully I'll have plenty (time, not weight).

Event comments:

It was an excellent race. Jen and I got there the day before to help out and ended up helping to sweep the debris off the bike course for 3 hours... Very well done event! I'm hooked!!!!!

I was just looking to finish and to hopefully do it in less than 2:30:00 - check!

congrats! i've done that race before and the bike course (well, without whatever killer hill they added) and the run course are quite hilly.

Thanks guys. I really am on a serious high. I'm surprised my wife didn't put sleeping pills in my dinner tonight just to get me to shut up. I am truly addicted! A last minute change to the bike course presented me with a big hill, and I think I left half of my one lung at the top on the side of the road, I'm really happy that I stayed on the bike and rode it to the top. Next season I'll be skinnier and faster, so look out! It was a nice event and very well run.

Congrats, Frank! I was there and racing in your age group. Glad you had a good first race. I was telling someone after the race, I still stand at the swim start and think, "What the hell do I do this for?" and at the finish I'm thinking, "When can I get another race in?"

See you down the road!

No doubt! I'm trying to see what races I can do for next year already! I went back to check the standings and noticed that with the changes, the bike course was 16.5 miles, not 15! I wasn't as slow as what I thought I was on the bike!

CONGRATS ON YOUR FIRST TRI. It was mine also, we were riding near each other for most of the race. I was the one on the mountain bike. See you at the next race!
