Palmetto State Triathlon Series
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 53m 58s
Overall Rank = 178/271
Age Group = W40-44
Age Group Rank = 5/12
Pre-race routine:

Got to site about 6:15 or so. Felt good and ready to go.
Event warmup:

Jogged about 1/2-1 mile. Got in the water and swam a few yards.
Swim
  • 39m 12s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

I have only done 3 open water swims before this. My sighting is always bad. We swam out into direct sun. The second wave appartently all missed the turn buoy, and cut it short. I could see the turn buoy, but missed one of the others and got off course. Had to cut way back to the left to catch the turn buoy. I would love to know how many extra yards I swam. The water was quite choppy as well.
What would you do differently?:

Some day I will learn to site. There is no one to practice with here, so the only practice I get is in my few and far between races.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

After seeing my time for the swim, I was so disappointed that I wanted to just quit then. I sort of took my time and moved on.
Bike
  • 1h 23m 22s
  • 24 miles
  • 17.27 mile/hr
Comments:

I wish I know what happened on the bike. I did have some issues with the front brake rubbing for maybe the first 3 miles, but then that was O.K. I didn't feel bad, but did feel I was going as hard as I could. Did the swim wear me out?
What would you do differently?:

Not sure as I'm still trying to work out the problem.
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Again, I was frustrated with the whole day and just didn't care about hurrying any more than I did.
Run
  • 48m 36s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

I decided not to give up and to just run. I felt good and stayed relaxed. Finally, I was able to pass some people. It was hot, but didn't overheat. Nutrition was right on all day.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor sighting. Choppy waters. A generally poor bike ride.

Event comments:

I think I need to start competing to have fun and not for time. I am reaching the conclusion that I will probably never be competitive on the bike or in the water, so I may as well just have a fun and forget about time.

Don't get down about one race. It took me a full season and a half of races.. probably 8 or so, before I got it right (for me).  You will do the same. The ' bad' races are more important to the learning process then the good ones. You'll always do this for fun.. but don't give up the idea of competing just yet.

Awesome run!!!! Definitely get your bike checked out for some kind of mechanical problem cuz I don't think you could have turned out a run time like that if you were fatigued. The swim was nasty business for everyone I talked to. Don't beat yourself up about sighting on that course.

Sorry you felt like you had an "off day." Looked good to me. Most importantly you persevered. Even if you are looking at time, you should still be having fun. Hang in there, chalk it up to a learning experience, and know you can only go up from here. I say, Good job!

Yo Kim!!!  We all have our bad days.  Even the pros are trying to figure out why some days they're faster and stronger than on others.  But just like you, even their "off" days are impressive.  C'mon, you had a bad day and got 3rd in your AG??????  That rocks!!!  I'll take some of that "bad day mojo" any time
