Swim
Comments: Thought I was over my open water worry, but as I started swimming out I was really panicky. I couldn't breathe and it took sheer will to keep from either turing around or calling for help. I did manage to talk myself down and by the time I rounded the first buoy I was feeling comfortable. As a matter of fact, I actually had my best 1/2 mile swim time today. What would you do differently?: If I had had more time, I think I would have warmed up in the lake just to get used to the feel. I'm confident in my overall swim ability but more OWS practice would have helped. Transition 1
Comments: One of the hardest parts of the race was probably T1. We had a fairly long run up a steep hill to get to the transition area from the lake. I was so out of breath by the time I reached my bike I had to take a minute to slow it down. What would you do differently?: Double knot my sneakers when putting them on...didn't do it today and I had to stop during the run to re-tie them. Bike
Comments: Lost a lot of ground on the bike. I actually felt pretty good, but I'm obviously a lot slower than most people out there. What would you do differently?: Couldn't do anything differently today. Definitely need more hill practice and speed work. Would LOVE to get a new bike soon. Also, I had water on my bike and I think it should have been Gatorade or something like that. Transition 2
Comments: I bike in my running shoes right now, so T2 was pretty easy. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Running is my weakest sport, so I wasn't surprised when I struggled a little. About 1.5 miles into the run my calves cramped up on me. I tried to continue running but I just couldn't so I took a drink and walked a bit until they loosened then started running again. What would you do differently?: I really think I cramped up since I wasn't able to eat my sports beans on the last lap of the bike and I only had water on the bike and not gatorade. Like my run and swim I think the one thing I can do most to improve is more practice. Post race
Warm down: Just walked around a bit...was waiting for my training buddy to finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: Swim: getting over that panicky feeling, and learning how to swim straight in OW. Bike: Need road bike Run: Better nutrition Event comments: I thought this was a great first experience! I'm so excited to join the ranks of everyone who has completed a triathlon!!!!! Up bright and early...re-checked my race bag and had breakfast (whole grain cereal w/ almonds and milk). Really had to choke down the breakfast due to nerves, but I'm glad I did.
To be honest, I really didn't do anything to warm-up although I probably should have. By the time I arrived, registered and set-up it was time to get ready for the swim.
