Subject: bike shorts over tri shorts?
I jsut did my first HIM. I changed into Bike shorts and then from bike shorts to running shorts. It took me alot of time. I like the confort of the bike shorts being the big guy I am. how effective would wearing bike shorts over tri shorts be? would I be better with compression shorts under bike shorts so I only have 1 pad on the bike? Should I just take the time and change? Should I stop being a wimp and deal with having more a pain from the seat.

How about running in your bike shorts?  I've done it for duathlons, although certainly the run wasn't as long.  It looks dumb, but I find my cycling shorts to be perfectly comfortable.

I would advise against wearing two pairs of any kind of shorts on the bike. Extra shorts provide extra opportunity for bunching, which will in turn provide extra sources of irritation. A little extra irritation over several hours of riding equals a royal pain in the butt.

Have you tried a neoprene saddle cover? QR and Desoto make them (there may be others as well). It might give you the extra padding you're looking for without the need for more chamois.

Outside of that, I would suggest a new saddle, or riding more. I certainly wouldn't put bike shorts over tri-shorts.

yeah I think I need to toughen up more aka ride lots. I will stick to the bike shorts for my next HIM but hopely that will be my last race I will need to use them. I do not want to swim or run in the bike shorts.

Start training in your tri short. Start with shorter rides and work your way up. You'll get used to the lack of padding, even for 56 miles. I rarely ride in my bike shorts anymore since I don't race in them.

I also find tilting the seat an little downwards helps with those long rides in aero.
