Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 445 at the dctriclub house. Talked to Rachel while I ate my breakfast then quickly headed out. I drove 80 mph down the road to Cambridge (guess I was ready to race!) and entered the park 10 mins after I left. The house was west of cambridge so it was an easy drive making the left turn into the park instead of the right turn like 99% of the people.

I set up my transition area quickly and talked to Dave, Glenn, Oceanannie, Jean, Ernie, and a few others. We left the area at 7 and watched the pros come in. I hung out with Jason and Dave until they left on their wave. By this point I had to go to the bathroom SO bad that I wanted to die. I couldn't wait for my wave to be called. I did time it. I went to the bathroom for over 2 minutes in the water! Holy cow!
Event warmup:

Ha! None.
Swim
  • 29m 52s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Ok swim. Everything I have read says that you really should pace yourself on the swim. Every race that I have ignored this hasn't ended up being a problem later on. So this time I pace myself. I didn't even get in the front row for the swim. So the first 500 yds was terrible. I got so beat up. There were probably 10-15 of us right on top of each other at the same speed. I also drank alot of Choptank water. I tried to look at my HR monitor but couldn't read a thing. I thought I saw 155 at the turnaround so I slowed down to around IM pace. This was so comfortable. It was like I was on a leisurely swim. I saw a couple of caps from the wave behind me at the end and I now know that loafing is stupid. I should have been 2-3 mins faster. My avg HR was 147, it should have been around 155. Oh well.
What would you do differently?:

Speed-up!
Transition 1
  • 03m 19s
Comments:

First bad thing was I forgot my sunglasses so I had to go in my transition bag to get them out. Then the lady in transition was yelling "ladies wear your race number!!" so I grabbed it like I always do before the run. But you can't put your race number on during the bike like you can while running. So I was just about at the end of transition carrying my sunglasses, race belt and bike and I dropped my bike. When I tried to stop it from falling I ended up catching the big ring on my leg and sliced it with a bunch of smaller cuts from the chain on the small ring. I didn't notice this until a few miles into the bike luckily. Though I was so excited to hear all of the "OOOHHHH" and "AHHH" when I dropped my bike.
13th in AG.
What would you do differently?:

Put the race belt on before I left transition.
Bike
  • 2h 55m 7s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.19 mile/hr
Comments:

Not sure what happened here. The first 5 miles I was focused on trying to get the race belt on and out of my hands. I ended up putting one of the buckles in my shorts and then the other buckle near it in the shorts and then trying to snap it with one hand without crashing. No crashing! Yay!

The first hr or so was the perfect effort, though I was really trying to get the HR down. I averaged 20.3 mph. Then somewhere in the middle I was so concerned with my HR (even though my legs felt great) so I slowed down. And then when I got to the headwind I slowed down even more. My HR was in the low 140s and mentally I was loafing. Grr!

Calories were ok. Probably a little on the low side. The stomach was feeling kinda bad. A couple of times I thought about puking. I am pretty sure it was from the water I drank in the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Keep the mental effort up the entire time.
Transition 2
  • 03m 29s
Comments:

A better transition than the first one. Though I forgot where my rack was and ran around for 30 secs lost. Sat down in transition and inspected the leg a bit. Nasty looking, but nothing terrible. There was more blood than cut if that makes any sense. 18th in AG.
What would you do differently?:

Focus on rack location.
Run
  • 2h 08m 25s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt great by mile .5. No HR issues on this run. I held 9-9:30 miles for the first 8 or so miles. Then the wheels fell off. But not from having trouble getting the HR up like my first 2 halves, but from my legs dying on me. My knees felt terrible. They just hurt. But the run overall was a great one for me. 2:08 is a PR by 3 minutes and I was strong mentally. The last 4 miles really hurt but I told myself that I WAS ONLY ALLOWED TO WALK the aid stations. The other halves ended with alot of walking. This discipline paid off. Passing Maj Rozelle while he was being interviewed by a tv van at mile 11 helped me keep focused on the task at hand. I didn't think goosebumps were possible while racing, but I had them!

It was great seeing everybody on the run!

Calories: Probably a bit low. 2 gels and 6 or so partially drank cups of gatorade aren't enough.
What would you do differently?:

I need to be more vigilant on my long runs. They are the most important workout of the week for me!
Post race
Warm down:

Medical tent to get the leg looked at. I felt dizzy afterwards. I really needed calories.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mental training I guess. I think way too much. Maybe I should race without any gadgets :) The bike makes no sense. I have put the miles in, but rode faster at Diamondman. It is a B race and I need to keep an eye on the prize, IM LP!

Event comments:

This is a great race! I really liked the run course. You get to see alot of people and lots of different things to look at. Though I still think the music in the cemetary was a bit weird.

nice job yo.  sometimes days don't go like we want them to, no matter how much we've trainied.  still looks to me like you had a pretty good day... and like you said, Keep Your eyes on the Prize!

Nothing wrong with that race! Every race is a learning process, and it sounds like this was an important piece to the puzzle leading up to Lake Placid.  You pee'd for 2 minutes?! I'm glad my wave was already gone Wink

A half marathon PR?! That's fantastic!!!  As always, it was great to get to see you. Hope the leg isn't an issue.

Nice race. I am pretty sure everyone or the majority of us felt the wheels come off at mile 8. Probably had something to do with the tailwind on the first half of the bike followed by the head wind on the last half. All in all, you did great.

Great job, Shelly.  Sounds like the day was more of mental challenge than a physical one.  That's a good thing with the lead up to LP!  You were looking TOUGH with that blood on your leg when I saw you on the run.

Great race! Way to push through on the run when the legs were hurting. It looks to me like you have improved tremendously, your run is getting stronger every race.

Thanks for timing the peeing for us.

Two minutes, eh? That sounds more like a slow leak to me .

I think you had a great race. I know you tend to be hard on yourself, but this is all a learning experience for what's to come in July, and it was only a B race. You're right - keep your eyes on the prize...IMLP!!

You had a really strong swim, bike, and run...I would love to do that great at my HIM this year. I hope to catch you one day ! Great job out there. You're awesome!!!!

Hey Michelle,

It sounded like you learned a lot of things that will help for IMLP.  Maybe you'll get a scar from the cut, then you have a good story for bragging.  When someone asks about the scar, you can say "Yeah, I got that racing a triathlon but it didn't stop me."  I enjoyed the race report.

It was nice to meet you before the race and to see you running along on the run course.  You didn't look like you were having a bad race when I saw you on there!

Congrats on finishing well even with all the hiccups you had.  I don't know why they were pestering you about the number on the bike ...... they didn't say anything to us about that.

And your "leisurely" swim crushed mine like there is no tomorrow.

Great race! I sure wish I could do a sub 30 minute swim call it OK. I wouldn't get too wrapped up about the bike time compared to the Diamondman, since the Diamondman course was only 54 miles (I remember Neil saying that at the pre race meeting. "Have two miles on us"). I had the same mental break down on the bike, I think the wind played a big role in that. Great job and good luck at Lake Placid.

Very good race for leading up to Ironman.  As far as running with a cut on your leg like that-you're one tough chick.  You're my hero!  Oh yeah, even though I'm not training, I still look forward to racing at Annapolis.

Nice job Michelle!  Excellent job on the run, especially mentally over those last few miles.  I think you did great despite your own opinions of the race.

Now for some advice.  WTF are you doing looking at your HR on the swim!?!?  You're a swimmer.  It's your strongest event.  You know what hard/easy feels like.  Screw the HR and just swim!  I'm going to be pissed if I read your IMLP report and hear you slowed down because your monitor said your HR was 5 beats too high in the water.

I can understand it a little more on the bike, but you'll have to go by feel some too.  It's a tough balance, especially early on as your HR will probably be high from adreneline and your legs feel great since they haven't been moving for hours yet.  But getting fluids & calories in are just as important as monitoring your effort.  Hopefully you'll get a good "feel" for the right effort for LP this weekend (i.e., not just an HR target).  Balance HR with other info.

Hope that didn't come off too preachy.  Like I said, I think you had a great race.  Thinking is good.  Overthinking is bad.  Another tough balance for us to get right.
