The only stupid questions are the ones not asked.  Or so "they" say.

1. Clydesdales are men over a certain weight . . . in most tris, it's 200 lbs. (For women, the category is usually called "Athenas," and the most usual minimum weight is around 160 lbs.)

2. Most men wear either a swim suit, tri suit, or singlet and tri shorts under a wet suit. One guy at IM Arizona this year wore a thong!

3. A mountain bike will be fine for a tri. It won't be as fast as a road bike or tri bike, but as long as it moves, it's fine. (Note, any USAT sanctioned triathlon and most independent ones will not let you use a tandem bike or a recumbent bike, but pretty much all of them of which I am aware will let you use a mountain bike).

A Clydesdale is a "larger" athlete.  Usually, a man over 200lbs is considered a Clydesdale, and some races have a special class for them.  A woman over 150lbs can be called an Athena, and is the equivalent of a Clydesdale.

Most men wear what they are going to wear on the bike under their suit.  Some wear their top some don't, but generally you wear you shorts underneath.

A mountain bike will do just fine.  I just rode a mountain bike in a sprint last weekend and it worked perfect.  I even passed some people on road bikes :D  You can also spend a couple bucks and get 26" race slicks for a mountain bike, which can easily bump you 3-5km/h on your pace.

And don't worry about the questions.  They are actually quite common.

Riding a mountain bike (if that is what you already have) is a great way to get into the sport without dropping alot of cash. Once (not if) you get hooked, you'll want the gearing and posture of a road or tri bike.

A Clydesdale or Clyde is a male athlete over a given weight threshold or generally larger athletes. The equivalent female term is Athena.

Most guys will wear their tri shorts and possibly top under their wetsuit, or one piece race suit

I've only done a handful of tri's thus far, but I don't think I've done one where I have not seen mountain bikes on the course. They are perfectly acceptable. I even did one race that had a special mountain bike division.

Yup. You'd qualify. However, you can still race your age group if you'd prefer.

mountain bikes will do and chicago tri has a division for them also. Though road bikes are easier and if youe going to tackle a half ironman or greater I would get atleast a road. Other than that its not needed.

Tri shorts atleast are great for under the wetsuit. remember no nudity is allowed. Tri shorts are nice since you do not have to worry about changing.
