Overall Rank = 209/249
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 25/29
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at about 4:30 and got on the road. Actually I didn't wake up at 4:30. I was actually up most of the night with nerves. I was worried about getting caught in the line getting into the park so I wanted to get there early. I took extra time to see how people were setting up their transition areas and just did what they did.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 12m 50s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started back behind everyone so I wouldn't get run over. I found this the wrong spot to start from. I got caught behind a bunch of slow people. I managed to get past them just before I had to round the bouy. I had trouble breathing after that. I usually breath ever 3 to 5 strokes in the pool. In the race I found that breathing ever 3 strokes was not enough. Maybe I need more OWS in the wetsuit to get used to it??? Trout lake.
What would you do differently?:

Start about middle of pack. More base.
Transition 1
  • 03m 22s
Comments:

My legs were wiped after the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Uhhh... I didn't think the transition was so bad.
Next time consume a GU in transition.
Bike
  • 49m 55s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 14.90 mile/hr
Comments:

took my legs some time to recover from the swim. I didn't know what was going on but I was working hard on the bike. I thought that maybe I had a flat. I stood up and tried to really get on it, then I heard my front brake rubbing a lot. I stopped and adjusted it by hand and then it went a lot better. I passed up about 5 or 6 people after that so I felt great.

Damn that big hill at the end. I walked part of it and 4 people that I had passes went back past me.
What would you do differently?:

Need more brick swim-bike. More base.
Transition 2
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

Looks like I had the longest T2 in my age group. Fooey!
What would you do differently?:

Uhhh???
Run
  • 33m 16s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

took it too easy. I should have completely let loose. My legs didn't feel up to it on the start though. I walked about 30 seconds on the dirt road too. I took off my shirt and said "no walking" and started running again. Got a decent kick at the end but I wasn't completely spent at the end so I slacked.
What would you do differently?:

more base, go all out till I drop.
Post race
Warm down:

get food and drink. Get my picture taking by the wife.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

need more base.

Event comments:

I'll be back!!!
I needed a kick in the arse and I got it today.
Next year I'm going to kick this race in the Bootay!

CONGRATS on your first tri.   YOU rock!!  Now we need to get you ready for STEELHEAD!  Just keep on building your base and you WILL get there!

I relate to many of your experiences... I also arrived way early worrying about traffic, also watched people set up transitions, swam in the back of my wave, etc...

Yeah, I'd advise breathing every other stroke.  That's how I swim.
