Total Time = 1h 27m 3s
Overall Rank = 120/1171
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 24/89
Pre-race routine:

Ate some cheerios and a banana
Event warmup:

Ran about a mile or so and did a little bit of swimming just prior to the start of my wave to make sure my goggles were sealed.
Swim
  • 16m 34s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started out near the front on the inside right since I breathe to the left. I felt pretty good going out to the first buoy except somehow I crossed through the traffic and got out to left of everyone by about 30 feet and had to make a big right turn to get to the first buoy. I even missed the second buoy way out to left also. I wasn't swimming very straight. coming in from the second large buoy to the beach I managed to swim a little more straight and got some rhythm going.
What would you do differently?:

I felt fine with my decision to start near the front since normally I start near the back. I'm more confident in my swimming and was able to hold my own in traffic but I need to sight better and swim straight. I feel like I could have done a little better on the swim even though it was a 2 minute improvement over last year.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

This transition was about what I expected. I had my T1 top off before I got to transition and just had to take off the bottoms. They came off pretty quickly and only got a little stuck on my ankles but not too bad. Got my shoes, helmet etc on and went.
What would you do differently?:

Overall this transition was fine.
Bike
  • 45m 5s
  • 17.2 miles
  • 22.89 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt pretty good on the bike and felt like I had a decent pace going. I was probably a little slow maybe on the hills but overall it seemed like a good ride. It ended up being 14 seconds faster than last year but I was hoping to be about a minute faster than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

This was really annoying. The guy next to me had racked his bike in my rack and had his wetsuit and all his crap all over my stuff. I had to pull his bike out and re-rack it then move all his shit over so I could find my running stuff. This transition was 1 minute slower than last year because of this.
What would you do differently?:

Be faster on the swim and bike so idiots like this don't get there before me.
Run
  • 22m 6s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

My run ended up being 11 seconds faster than last year but it sure didn't feel like it. I felt a little nausea in the first half mile or so and it seemed like I was wearing combat boots going up the hill. After the first mile the nausea went away and I started to feel OK and got into my pace. Only passed a few people. I was hoping to be closer to 21 minutes on this but it was OK.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure?
Post race
Warm down:

Ate some food and drank some water and visited with friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to train harder and with more intensity

Event comments:

Overall I guess it was a good race since I beat last years time by two minutes but I was hoping for sub 1:25 today. T2 definitely cost me one of the minutes and I guess the other minute would be split between the bike and run.

Sounds like you had a solid race.  To put the bike and run together like you did is certainly respectable!!!  If you're doing the Boulder Peak, hopefully we'll see ya there.

Great job Ken!  I think you just need to swim more and not rack your bike next to dumb people!!  This SAME thing happened to me at the peak last year.  Sounds like you were nicer about it though.  I just threw her bike off the rack and kicked her crap out of the way!

Nice job anyway and keep training

Great to see you as always!

Nice PR on that course yesterday.  I thought the conditions were fairly tough and it seems like everyone felt bad on the run.  No wind, thank god, but the heat was clearly getting to everyone out there.  Great race though, very solid.

Good job on beating last years time!  Goal time are insignificant in my book.  If you beat your time from last year, that is huge!  Nicely done and great to see you as always.  Keep pounding out the miles on the bike!

Nice job out there. Sounds like everything you can control (which doesn't include dumb people) went well. Nice meeting you too.

Great race! You took a lot of time off your swim from last year, so you HAVE to be happy about that. It looks like, if you work on your OW swimming sighting and swimming straight, put that together with your smoking bike and a run time I'd kill for, you'll kill the course next year!! Congrats

Gotta love the people that have their stuff in the wrong spot....argh!

Improvement is improvement, so nice work!  I'll bet you can make up time on the swim too if you can not go too far left!  Did anyone follow you?

I had someone rack their bike in my spot at the Chicago tri a few years back and the racks were so jammed in together and the bikes so jammed in on them there was nowhere to rerack their bike or throw it off to the side. I had to rack my bike somewhere else completely (probably in someone else's spot) and then run back to my transition spot to get my running shoes!

That run was tough with the heat. You had a really great race though and improved over last year's time by two minutes!!!

Killer race Kenny! It's too bad Scott beat you. i don't know if I can beat him either... so don't feel bad. Still chopping off more than 2 minutes at your age is quit an accomplishment!
