Total Time = 1h 25m 10s
Overall Rank = 142/1171
Age Group = f30-34
Age Group Rank = 4/125
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at the CRACK of dawn - 3:45AM. Cup of coffee, PBJ, Sustained Energy and hit the road. Ate on the way down. Parked, got marked, wasted time with my bike, left transition. Got dressed and went for my WU with Stacie.
Event warmup:

short jog - about 10-12'. Added in 2 pick ups. The legs appeared to be working!! Swam for about 15' pre race. Wanted to be sure I was good and warmed up.
Swim
  • 12m 51s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

So I started out too fast. Adrenaline or whatever, but I definitely started out too fast. Finally Wendy Mader passed me and I caught her heelf for a few hundred yards. Then we rounded the 2nd bouy and I TOTALLY lost her and had to go it on my own and at that point at least one other gal caught me. I was fatigued from going out too fast I think. Put in a final little kick and then stood up too soon. OK swim - better than the last 2 I guess, but not great. About 30" faster than last year.
What would you do differently?:

go out more a little more moderately - I was literally in the lead. I should just get behind Wendy to start with and try to stay on her heels the whole way. I seem to lose people at bouys...
Transition 1
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

So this transition was a disaster!!! I got the suit off fine, but then I couldn't get my shoes on - THEN when I tried to buckle my helmet, I bumped my bike and almost knocked over the bike next to mine (and I know who's bike it was and I was REALLY trying not to knock it over!) Anyway, then I got stuck behind a bit of a traffic jam of people crossing the mats just in front of me. I did do a flying mount, but it was so crowded at that second, I'm not sure it made a difference.
What would you do differently?:

Not be a KLUTZ!! Get a better transition spot. I was on the left - I should have picked a spot where I could be on the RIGHT of my bike.
Bike
  • 47m 20s
  • 17.2 miles
  • 21.80 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought this was a decent ride. I wanted to be at 22 mph and sub 47 - BUT I was a little short of that. I was still happy thinking it was a good effort, but I'm concerned because my watts were WAY low. Don't know if this was a result of overtraning, mental funk, or what, but I felt like I was going hard and fast, but my power didn't agree!
What would you do differently?:

Look at my power meter?? Maybe it just wasn't my day.
Transition 2
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

Aside from losing a shoe and then having trouble getting my running shoe on, this was a fine transition. Just need to get the shoes prepped a tad better.
What would you do differently?:

Just be smoother.
Run
  • 22m 44s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, not sure where to start here... I think I should just say I felt like crap and leave it at that. I pretty much went on feel and went as hard as I could, but I just didn't have it in my today. I got passed with 1 mile to go and couldn't hang on her heels. Turns out she was running 7' pace which is where I wanted to be. I just couldn't dig out the extra today and it kept me from the podium. STILL I was much faster on the run than last year and I ran as fast as I could today. incidenatlaly it was a 5k PR, so I guess I should be happy about that.
Overall I will say I'm happy and not at the same time. Great that I can be 4th on a "crappy" day and still pull something out, but on the other hand, It makes me more worried about how I'm going to do at Nationals.
What would you do differently?:

feel better???
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged a bit then just walked, swam with the kids and ate some good grub :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The last 2 races and pending Nationals in 2 weeks. Overtrained possibly and also just not mentally up for this race.

Event comments:

Really love the whole 5439 series races. I'm not crazy about sprints though and I wish there was more food.
By the time I got to the tent a lot of stuff was gone. Overall though, well organized and worth it!!

Great race Julia.  Train smart over the next 10 days so you can kick at Nationals.

Umm. You had a crappy day and kicked my butt by almost twenty minutes. I'd say that's pretty dang awesome on ANY day. It was hot out there for the run and that can sure zap you too. Awesome job overall!!

Just make sure you get plenty of rest before Nationals and you'll be awesome. I can't wait to read how it goes.

You did great...amazing like usual...congrats!

You know Wendy...she is coached by the same coaches I use but with far different results

Nice paces all the way around....cool on the big improvement on the run and PB!

I can't wait to see how you do at Nationals~

Congrats on the crappy PR! I always find your RR's interesting because you are at the level where you actually have to think about strategy in regards to other racers, not just your own pacing strategy. Adds in a whole 'nother dimension & it's a learnign curve too. If you are able to put up times like these on an off week when you weren;t even sure you were going to race I'm sure you are going to rock nationals.

Stop lying, I know you knocked Mary's bike over on purpose!  She probably would have been on the podium if not for you . . .

Okay really, you had a solid race.  Sorry to hear the watts on the bike were down.  I thought the rule was that if the watts on the bike are down, and HR is normal or up, it's time to rest?  Your call, but I can't see how you would be too hard on yourself after racing this much this early in the season.  And really, there isn't enough time to train for Nationals to improve fitness much, so rest a couple of days and then get in some speed work.  My two cents.

Anyway, good race, you did great.  You'll qualify at Nationals, I'm sure of it.

Crappy day?  I don't see it that way.  You did awesome and had a tough field.  What 5 minutes faster than last year.  Yes you have been racing too much but you will be ready for Nats.  Just don't do too much these next 2 weeks and you will fly.  You are well trained.  See you in 2 weeks.

Congrats on the 5k PR and a good race in general. Now quit overanalyzing everything and start getting your head in the right place in time for Nationals. Your body will come around if you let it.

I'm still laughing at your comment during our warmup run when Wendy passed us and I didn't know who she was. See, that's the difference between us - she's your competitor. To me, she's just someone in a Polar uniform!

For a crappy day, I think you had a great race. When you look at the podium, do you ever wonder how many years of racing experience those women have, especially Wendy? YEARS. You have less than 2. It's amazing to see how far you've come in such a short time, but I'm more excited to see where you're GOING as you get more and more experience.

Hey, if you're knocking over you're competitors bikes in the transition area to slow them down, I think that's going a bit too far

Seriously though, everyone here is right.   Let your body recover, get some speed workouts in and you're going to do great at nationals.  If you think that this race was crappy and you placed 4th, imagine how you'll do when you feel good!

Way to kick .  I know the 4th place is a sucky place to be....but seems like this year was just tough all around!  Way to go....and great to see you yesterday!

How did you lose a shoe?

J, girl you rock! You PR'd on a 5K AFTER swimming and biking. And you're a goddess for your bike mph! Fast as usual and just as perky. You rock!

Really remarkable race.  1:25 is nothing short of incredible.  I don't know if Mike introduced us, but I seem to recall trying to connect with you before last year's Triple ByPass that was such a horror.  Looking forward to meeting you if you don't mind hanging around the finish line at one of these events waiting for us turtles!  Again, great job at the races!

Nice job, Julia. A PR 5K time in a tri is pretty cool. I don't like sprints either. not enough time to really get rollin'. You will do great at Nationals.
