Subject: tri shorts vs bike shorts for 1/2 IM
Thought I saw a thread on this not too long ago, but can't find it, so my apologies for the repitition. After yesterdays thread on sore girl parts I started thinking about my 1/2 coming up. Had planned on wearing tri shorts, but I have been quite sore. So, for those of you that wear bike shorts.... do you wear them under your wetsuit or add them in T1? Do they ever dry? Do they bug you when you run?

Thanks!

Are you sore right now in your bike shorts or in your tri shorts?

Personally, I find tri shorts more comfortable than bike shorts for rides of all lengths, as long as I make sure to use a product like chamois butter before heading out.  It definitely took a few weeks to work up to it, though.  All I'm saying is... don't rule out the tri shorts!

Train in bike shorts and race in Tri shorts.

As far as racing goes...everything you need to ride in should be worn under your wetsuit. Take your wetsuit off...jump on your bike and go....

I bike in bike shorts . . . but do all my bricks in trishorts. I was a little more sore, but it seems to work. Swimming in bike short, then riding and running might lead to some interesting chaffing. Give it a try a few times and if it works . . . go with it.

The bottom line is, 'do not try anyhthing new on race day'.

I train in bike shorts and race in tri shorts. I will do a long brick or two before a longer race in my tri shorts just to make sure they feel good.

I find when I race stuff I worry or think about while training just goes out the window as I focus on racing.

I think of the 3 types of bike shorts I wear one would dry okay others would take longer. If  you want to try it out, get them fully wet and do your long bike/run brick of the week and see how it works. Or if you want to take a more modest approach get them wet and then do an hour ride and see how they do....and then if the work ok do a long brick with them.

All good advice .. thanks. I wear tri shorts now for short rides, but wore my bike shorts this morning. Still a little sore, but better. Hadn't thought of the train in bike shorts, race in tri shorts. Makes sense, think I'll do it. I have a friend who wears bike shorts under her wetsuit, she says they never really dry. I would think it would be very uncomfortable.

I did the majority of my bike training in tri-shorts, including the long rides. Didn't want any big surprises on race day.

Worked for me, your results may vary.

I plan on using tri shorts for my HIM in september.  I use bike or tri short to train in depending on what is clean.  I prefer Tri shorts though so I can get the butt used to them.

on my long rides (i.e. >40 mi) , have had some issues with the tri-shorts , but invariably with some of that wonder chammy butter , alls well

am not very fast so I need all the reduction in T-time that I can get , hence I never wanted to go with bike shorts for my HIM.

Sensing a trend here.. get out the chamois butter and bring on the tri shorts!

I changed into bike shorts in T1. Then again I am a big guy and I wanted to be able to stand being on the bike for 4 hours. Which is the longest I every ridden in my life. I also was inbetween tri shorts at the time. I got some now to train in and I hope to do the tri short thing for my next him because changing into bike shorts just takes too long. I need to get my butt used to using the lighter tri shorts.

I have generally used tri shorts for 1/2 IM distance, although I always get a bit saddle sore since I almost always train in bike shorts - and the tri shorts have a smaller pad. But, my tri shorts were expensive whereas the bike shorts were not, so I used the bike shorts for training and tri shorts for racing only.

For an IM, I wore bike shorts under my wetsuit and it worked fine. The shorts I wore were the desoto 400-mile. THe pad is good, but it's not so thick that it sops up water. But even if it did, it will usually dry pretty quick. But, I changed to tri shorts for the run; I don't think you could comfortably run in bike shorts.

Good luck!

Tmason, I wore tri shorts under my wetsuit at Timberman 1/2 IM. When I got out of the water I slipped on my bike shorts over the tri shorts. Double pad. After the 56 mi ride, I slipped the bike shorts off for the run. Worked fine for me. My 2 cents.

Excellent idea.. reasonably comfortable on the bike and you don't have to run in bike shorts (didn't like the thought of that). And reasonably fast since I'm already pretty slow in T1.

Thanks!

For me... riding in aero position is much more comfortable in tri shorts. If I go too long in padded bike shorts, my girl parts get sore.
