Wisconsin Triterium Triathlon

Overcast
Total Time = 2h 38m 51s
Overall Rank = 39/217
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 4/27
Pre-race routine:

Stayed at the Hilton on Menona Terrace (used some of my hilton points). Got to see the IMWI transition area. Pretty cool. The race didn't start until 7:30am, and we had pre-assigned transition areas, so no need to get up too early. Got up around 5am, checked the weather on computer, had a cliff bar, bananna, and some water. Holly and I (no kids, stayed with Grandma) headed to the race course.
Event warmup:

Set up my transition area. Went for a little jog, checked the gears on the bike. Then headed over for a swim warmup of about 300m. Felt good. Met up w/ Holly and did some stretching.
Swim
  • 24m 28s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 38s / 100 meters
Comments:

Really good swim. I am pretty confident with where my OWS is at right now. I can sight very well. In the sprint I did, it was an all out effort, this pace was much more relaxed and felt I could hold it for a long time. I drafted when I could, but it was kind of tight out there with all the different waves, etc.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, a great swim. Maybe try to draft a bit more.
Transition 1
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Good transition in that this included a long jog up to the area, and I was in one of the last stalls.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. As smooth and fast as I can go.
Bike
  • 1h 18m 59s
  • 25.5 miles
  • 19.37 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a good bike for me. I need to incorporate more hills into my training, but I did pretty good as far as gearing goes. I stayed in the saddle when I could, but there were 5-7 hills where it was impossible to do that. It was taxing to finally get up to speed and then have to climb another hill. Great workout, and I am sure it will do me well for SOR.

On a funny note. They had this guy on top of Observatory hill playing the bag pipes. It was very cool, but also symbolic in that people were dying going up (walking their bikes) and then on the way down, people were dying (crashing on the turn going too fast). He was good at the pipes, too.

This was an amateaur qualifier and guys like Mike Boemer (rode 25mph at PP Oly), could only muster 22mph out there.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more hills in training.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Wasted some time here. Wanted to run w/ the Garmin, so I put that on. And also had a long run to the exit.
What would you do differently?:

Be smoother.
Run
  • 52m 29s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

Not very happy with this run, but I did OK. I wore myself out on the hills, had stomach cramps, and it was hot/humid (enough excuses?). I started out with a nice 7:45m/m pace, but then the cramps and hills hit. Everybody was walking up these hills. I struggled through most of the next 4 miles around 8:35m/m and just felt horrible. With about 1.2 miles to go, the cramps went away, and I finished pretty strong. The last 1.2 miles was at a 7:48m/m pace...
What would you do differently?:

Again, run more hills. Hydrate better on the bike (have to believe this was the reason for the cramps).
Post race
Warm down:

Met w/ Holly and my cousin who goes to the UW-Madison and came down to see his first triathlon. Got a couple bottles of water and headed towards the lake to cool down. It was getting super hot/humid at this point. The lake felt good on my legs!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A bunch of things. The hills (or my lack of hill training), the heat/humidity combination, improper hydration. Stuff, I will work on in training.

Event comments:

Very good event. Got to ride some of the MOO course. They had the course very well marked. The distances were as advertised. The race started on time. They had a great DJ, post party was OK, but they did have a raffle and I won a 26 serving Hammer Gel bottle and a gel flask. Not a PR kind of a course, but a very nice challenge.

That is a FANTASTIC bike time for that course!  Observatory Hill sucks big time, it took me 2 years to be able to ride up it w/out walking my bike.  I wish I had been in town to come cheer, sounds like you had a blast.

Great Job DONKEY, though I'm wondering where the race kit is in your pictures?    Nice job on a tough course.  Good description, I could feel the Lake Geneva hills in my quads when I was reading about your run...sounds similar.  Yea, that pace on hills that you describe is AWESOME for the bike.

Say HELLO to your HILLY FRIEND!!!

Nice race given the hilly conditions.  Keep working those hills, especially on the run, for Rockman next year.

Ever see "So I Married an Axe Murderer?" Everytime I see a bag piper I think of Mike Meyers playing Stuart Mackenzie and singing Rod Stewart to the bag piper in the wedding scene. "If you want my body and you think I'm sexy
come on honey tell me so."

And then of course "we have a piper down, a piper down."

Wow - that course sounds pretty intense and it looks like you chewed it up and spit it out!  Awesome job and I can't wait to see what you do at SOR!

BTW, nice work grabbin' the GU stuff too.
