Total Time = 1h 54m 29s
Overall Rank = 171/189
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 15/18
Pre-race routine:

Relaxed and hung out with fellow Bters Tink and Newleaf. Did alot of stretching.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 23m 3s
  • 750 meters
  • 03m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

My swimming is dismal and I need to work harder at it especially in OW. My only solace was that I did not give up. If anything, I'm more determined than ever to get better in this discipline.
What would you do differently?:

Grab a jet ski as it goes by
Transition 1
  • 03m 39s
Comments:

Legs were wobbly coming out of swim so other than trying to catch my breath, I'm surprised that it took this long.
What would you do differently?:

I need to think about it for next race
Bike
  • 54m 24s
  • 15 miles
  • 16.54 mile/hr
Comments:

I think it was 17 miles and not 15 miles (even the bike shirts state 18). I got stung by a bee on mile 11. He flew into me and decided I was in his way. I guess I should be DQ because of outside help - It gave a little bit of adrenalin.
What would you do differently?:

Based on my rank, push those pedals harder next time. Remember, it is a race and not a tour.
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Looks like I did things right. Rank 9 out of 17. I guess I'm good at the rest stops.
Run
  • 31m 41s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 20s  min/km
Comments:

Now I'm an official hillbilly for running so many of them thar hills.
What would you do differently?:

Try to increase speed but I was happy with this time given how much the swim took out of me.
Post race
Warm down:

Pour some cold water on me and sit down with my daughters who were my faithful cheerleaders.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

swimming

Event comments:

I thought it was a challenging race and has spured me on to work harder on my swimming.

Steve, from one guy who struggles with the swim to another, way to tough it out.  The bike course was longer than 15 miles... probably more like 15.6 or so.

Congratulations on a great race and even better post-race burgers, hillbilly!  Was great meeting you and the kids... they were great with Sophie.  Also, thanks for helping get her to put her bib on... most excellent parenting skills on your part.

Thanks for the validation. OWS is much tuffer than pools. I think if they could put some lines on the bottom of the lake it would go a long way for us newbies.

Fun report, Steve...love the Jet ski plan! Sure would be nice if we knew the actual distance of the bike on this race...ah well. We can all fool ourselves into thinking we went some 35mph the whole way! Great post-race cookout...already looking forward to the one after Nation's in September!
