Des Moines, Iowa
United States
Total Time = 2h 57m 12s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 97/138
Pre-race routine:

Up early for shower (weird, I know) and breakfast of banana, granola bar, orange juice, and diet coke. Took forever to get to the parking (35 minutes in line). Transition set up was smooth.
Event warmup:

Not so much.
Swim
  • 41m 49s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 47s / 100 meters
Comments:

Very slow swim. No wetsuits, and I got kicked in the face in the first 50 meters. This sent my goggles askew and filled with water. After turning to my back to fix them, I tried swimming again to find I was panicky and hyperventilating. I strongly considered quitting, even starting out for land at one point. Finally decided to make it to the first turn buoy by swimming a side stroke. Hung on there for the next wave of racers to pass, must have been 5 minutes or so. Then, with regained composure, I swam.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up. Not get kicked in the face.
Transition 1
  • 03m 8s
Comments:

First transition. Could be smoother, but I was just happy to be out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Wait for the drink of PowerAde until I'm on the bike. Hope for a wetsuit legal race so I can have my shirt on under the suit.
Bike
  • 1h 22m 7s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.16 mile/hr
Comments:

Pedaling that fast on my mountain bike, while watching folks with half the cadence blow by me, was frustrating to say the least.
What would you do differently?:

Buy a road bike! Practice more biking.
Transition 2
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Fast, as I already had my shoes on. I stopped for another drink of PowerAde during this transition as well.
Run
  • 48m 26s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

Fairly smooth after initial quad cramping. Took several rest walks and still finished fairly quickly. Need to work less hard on the bike to make the first mile easier.
What would you do differently?:

Better pre-run hydration and nutrition
Post race
Warm down:

Walking and eating/drinking

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike, panic in water after getting kicked, inexperience

did you miss the second loop on the run?
many people had that happen due to poor race design.

Great race, awesome speed on the mtn bike. You will be podium ready once you get a road bike!

Nope, no missed loops for me. I thought it was pretty clear with the guy screaming "turn left twice at 7th, then straight!"

It was my first tri, so I don't have any others to compare to, but I thought it was fairly well organized, and very well attended.

Now time to get a real bike. Any suggestions?

Are you going to get a road bike for sure? If you do, let me know what you find out from the people you talk to. Also, this would greatly increase my chances of getting a road bike myself!

Rob--I am getting a road bike. It's just a question of when. I hope to get a chance to do a little research into them. If I find useful resources, I'll keep you updated.
