Subject: Help me find a bike
Hi~

I'm looking to buy a used triathlon bike and am wondering what I can reasonable expect for $1000. What should I look for....miles, races, components, etc??? What brands are decent, good, middle of the road. I don't need top of the line but if i'm going to spend around $1k I don't want a bike that's going to fall apart on me. I'm fairly small and need a small bike. I'm having a hard time finding a small size. Any advice at all to help me get through all the lingo as I search for "my" bike would be much appreciated.

When you say "Small" exactly how small are you referring to?  Do you have an idea what frame size will work?  51, 54, 56 cm?

I have a 56cm Felt S22 for sale here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=79776&posts=7&start=1

I think this frame size would be considered Medium.

Hi~

I'm 5' tall and 111 pounds. I'm looking for a 48cm or 49cm bike. I'm just need help knowing what is a good brand and what are good components. I don't need/want top of the line but I also don't want to spend $1k on a poor quality bike.

Thanks for your help!!

Based off of your height you might want to look into WSD models (women specific design), otherwise your options of Triathlon specific bikes will be minimal.  Giant, Trek, Specialized and others have WSD triathlon bikes.  It will be hard to find a new bike for $1000.

Have you considered a road bike?  If so you'll have more sizing options.

As far as quality is concerned... most manufactureres are pretty much the same when comparing apples to apples (aluminum to aluminum, carbon to carbon etc).  The difference comes in the compenent groups.

They're slowly adding more, but they're starting to whittle down bikes according to certain criteria. Some according to cost, others according to size [long torso, short leg, vice versa]. I think the latest was a bike for someone "Strong as an ox, richer than God"
