ROLLER GIRL TRY OUTS!!!

I am pretty stoked that Roller Derby has come back and seems to be a pretty cool encarnation of the sport.

I know it can be a bit campy at times but it sure looks like great fun.

had a hard night last night, but having a better morning. here's the email i sent out to family and friends. for anyone who doesn't think this is a sport - WRONG! this was one of the most intense and BRUTAL workouts i've ever been through.

well, try outs were yesterday for the minnesota roller girls. about 40 women laced up and (literally and figuratively) hit the floor of the roy wilkins auditorium. it was a tough try out, and several women dropped out. here's what we did in the 3 hours we were on wheels:

ladder drill warm up - 80% effort for 2 minutes, sprint all out for :30. i bit it 3 times during the warm up and was a bit shaken up for a while. smacked my head hard on one, and managed to bruise my elbow up through the pad on another...but it was still FUN.

stretching (try doing downward dog in roller skates)

balance/coordination drills: going through cones, going through cones backwards, stops, toe starts, starts from all 4s, starts from on your back, cross steps, cornering (i kicked tail on that one, thanks to all the years of figure skating!!!!).

speed/endurance drills: 5 laps in <1:00. 20 laps in <5:00. if you couldn't do both of those things, you were out. piece of cake.

stations: sprint from station to station. first, flutter kicks on your back. really hard w/ heavy skates on! second, mountain climbers (again, with skates on!), third, sit ups. fourth, push ups (i've been doing lots of push ups this year, so this was cake too!).

and last but not least, the 10 MINUTES OF HELL! sprint for 10 minutes on a mini track w/ 15+ other women. as spike the lead ref said - 'now is the time to show us you want to be a roller girl! don't hold anything back!' here's where all my endurance work really paid off. most of the girls were beat already, but i still felt great. i think i lapped everyone on the track 'cept benita!!!

in the end, 14 women were picked for boot camp from the original 40. benita and i were among them. after boot camp, there will be a draft for the teams. there are only 10 spots, so i don't know if i will make a team this year, but i'm really glad i went ahead with the try outs.

oh, and i'm REALLLLLLY sore today!

Cool! My sister skates for the Atlanta Roller Girls. Her name is Aimzz 2 Kill, number 20/20.  She loves it.  I've been to several of her bouts and they are BRUTAL!  I totally believe it's a killer workout.  She lost a lot of weight her first season skating with them.  Good luck... and if I were you, I'd invest in some good anti-inflammatories!!

she's the meanest hunk of woman that anybodys ever seen...she is 5'6, 215 beach blonde bomber with a streak of mean. She knew how to knuckle and she knew how to scuffle and fight. Oh the roller derby program said that she was built like a 'frigerator with a head. Her fans called her toughy but all her buddies called her spike. Oh, I could not help it but to fall in love with this heavy duty woman I've been speaking of....things were kind of bad until the day she skated in to my life. Well she might be nasty, she might be fat but I never met a woman who was bigger than that. She is my roller derby queen....

Keep us posted about boot camp. I am DEFINATELY rooting for you

 

PS You are not nasty, fat or anywhere near 215 pounds....I just LOVE that song so I had to put it down.

That's so cool. Good luck at camp and can't wait for the pics!!!

now i really feel like a roller girl. i just ordered a second set of skates so that i don't have to keep swapping wheels and keep my good boots in top shape. i'll also have two helmets now! hee hee. i am still doing tris though, trust me. i have a sprint on saturday (god knows how that will go...i'm still SOOOO sore!), an oly in august, and that 10 hour race in sept.
