Man, I'm sorry to have missed everyone on Saturday night! As you'll soon read, I did my darnedest to be there. I did however get a good story out of the experience...
So I drop off my bike, scout the course and check my watch: 5:15. Perfect. I'll just go to the Chancery a little earlier and see if anyone is there yet. Not knowing the Racine area at all, I ask a couple of trithletes if they know where The Chancery is at. They say, "Sure, It's out at our hotel, along I-94." I thought yep, that's the one I've seen before, too, when i've driven by on the highway before. But that's almost in Pleasant Prairie. However, I figure with so many people coming up from Northern Illinois, that would just make it a little more convenient for everyone.
Just to check, I ask a couple more people around transition. "Oh sure, The Chancery? We passed that on the way in-- it's at The Radisson, south on 94." OK, that's where it must be, I reason.
So I drive the 25 minutes to 94, go South and keep driving. Man, this seems like a long ways away, I say to myself, but it's got to be there. I know The Chancery is a chain, but I didn't see anything along the main drag in Racine and Racine really isn't all that big.
I finally see the sign for the Radisson, exit, and go into the Restaurant. I ask the host if there's a big party anywhere and he says, "Sure, it's in the back party room." He points to where I should go and kind of looks at me strangely. I figure, maybe he doesn't think I look like much of a triathlete.
So I go to the back party room and open the door. Inside is a huge group that look like they just stepped out of the Middle Ages. Guys in tights and broad hats, beer wenches with their low-cut blouses, other guys walking around with legs of turkey. Obviously, a group fresh from the Renaissance Faire. A few take a break from their bawdy merry-making to look over at me.
I say, "Uh, I guess I'm in the wrong place" and walk out.
I ask the host if there's another Chancery in the area. He says, "Oh sure, but it's in Racine, about 45 minutes away." I check my watch. It's 6:15. I eat a lonely dinner in the bar and drive home.
