Is anyone else planning to do the Great Raleigh Road Race on July 4th? I'm doing this 5 miler, hopefully a 10 miler in early fall I think, and then my first half marathon in November.

They have a kids run too. I'll wait and see if my 3 year old son shows an interest on his own.

Good Luck to both of you.  I will be driving from NY to NC on the 4th.  But if either of you are doing Triangle, I am volunteering.

You might be in the car on the way home by the time I finish. It will take me about 55 minutes, 50 would be great! I've run 5+ a few times, but never on sidewalks, my joints are going to take a pounding.

surfwallace - 2007-06-28 7:05 PM I'm thinking strongly about doing this. What do you mean "sidewalks"? Why do they call it a "road race"?

That's a good point. I actually don't know if its on sidewalks, I just know the race is downtown where sidewalks are available, so I figured we be forced onto those.

I've never done a running race, do they usually close the road?

I usually do my long runs in Umstead, so even the road is harder than normal for me.

I have done a few road races, (Richmond Marathon, RnR Half Marathon in VA Beach, Myrtle Beach Marathon and a bunch of shorter runs) and on everyone I have been on they will either have the entire road closed or atleast one lane of it closed. They are alot of fun and I have been lucky so far, The atmosphere on all of these were great so you dont even think about the distances. If you get a chance, the Rock and Roll Half Marathon in Va Beach has been the best by far and is definitely worth the drive up to do it. Alot of fans and spectators and not to mention the bands every mile and cheerleaders as well. Good luck to you.
