Buffalo Springs Lake Ironman 70.3
Sunny
Total Time = 5h 39m 11s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 64/131
Pre-race routine:

coffee, bagel with peanut butter, water w/ nunn
set up my bike, only issue here. I forgot my salt tabs, being a heavy sweater I knew i was going to need these.
Event warmup:

didn't warm up for the race
Swim
  • 33m 35s
  • 1931 meters
  • 01m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was nervous about wearing wetsuit since water was warm, so i placed myself on outer edge and never went full out on swim, nice steady strokes never felt tired. When i got out of the water I saw 2-3 people getting there wetsuits pulled off so i stopped to have someone pull mine off. I checked my watch when i got out of the water and it was at 31 minutes and some change. I kept hearing the beep going off and when i looked about 20 meters up the hill there was the timing mat, lost 1-2 minutes here.
What would you do differently?:

I had planned on taking my suit off, should of stuck with plan and ran out of water, would have save myself a few minutes
Transition 1
  • 02m 44s
Comments:

besides the issues with the wetsuit stripper no issues except my suit got stuck on my heals.
What would you do differently?:

stick with original plan
Bike
  • 2h 50m 45s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.68 mile/hr
Comments:

I missed having my salttabs. Looking back at race i wish i would have pushed harder on hills as i spun them and they were easy. I thought i was going to save myself for the run... as this has been my strongest part.
What would you do differently?:

remember salttabs - rookie mistake. Overall happy with bike, feel i could have shaved at least 5 minutes off time
Transition 2
  • 02m 52s
Comments:

I actually sat down to collect myself as both legs cramped on last hill. I remember thinking, i have 13 miles to run.... shit. I just took my time and collected myself
Run
  • 2h 09m 15s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

I thought before this race that this is where i would make sometime. leading up to the race, i have been in the 7:30 ish range. I just didn't have it today. 1st mile 8:15, then potty break (20-30 sec's), hit mile 2 right at 16 min range, mile 3 24:30, then started the hills and i fell apart. after that it was run/walk/run/walk
What would you do differently?:

I will do this race again and i will better prepare myself
Post race
Warm down:

walked to food/gatorade table. drank a g-ade, ate a banana and some oranges. stretched out and was thankful i finished

What limited your ability to perform faster:

i could blame it on the salt tabs. I'm not going to do it. I need to get stronger on bike and work on my run strength after the bike on the longer course.

Event comments:

I really like the course, very challenging. The bike course is awesome. I thought for being an IM 70.3 event the post race would have been better. I like this course even with my run explosion
i wanted to run 5:15 at worst case scenario

We got lucky as first half of bike the sun was never really out and the winds weren't too bad. oh and last hill before t2, both quads, hamstrings, calves cramped up climbing the last hill.

Nice race! A few more miles and you definitely would have caught me. Feel your pain on the run. Good job!

Yep, that was me. I remember you. You and Todde and I actually did a swim-run workout at Barton Springs and the Town Lake trail last summer. I couldn't run much at all back then. You guys were on a simple jog and I had to let you go because I couldn't keep up!

I've been focusing on it a lot . . . obviously to the detriment of the other events. Was hoping that stronger bike legs would lead to less fatigue and better times on the run, but so far, that's only been true in my shorter events.

be proud of your race. you had a strong performance and now you know what to do to get even faster. take your time ramping up for longhorn and work on those 2hr bike/1hr run bricks. you do that and you will break 5hours at longhorn for sure!!!! great job and thanks for driving to lubbock - thats where your running legs went : )

Sorry I missed you at the race.  We'll have to hook up at another race.

I've had several coaches tell me that the 70.3 distance is the hardest to 'get right'.  It has elements of both short course racing and long course racing.  Then there is the BSLT course which is tough.

I hear you about the run...mine sucked.  But, hey, still a good race.  We learn something each time we're out there and have fun.

TJ

Jamie, great race and you carried our mentor group to a respectable showing.

We had great weather and a prime opportunity to put up some good times, but this is a tough course and a lot can happen along the way.

See you at a race in the future.

I'd take those times on that course anyday.  Great job and I am glad that the gearing didn't hurt
