Subject: Petacchi to be investigated for doping

"The Italian Cycling Federation will investigate Alessandro Petacchi for doping at this year's Giro d'Italia, after receiving evidence from the sport's governing body.

Petacchi, who rides for Team Millram, returned a "non-negative" test for the asthma drug salbutamolo during the 21-stage race, which was won by compatriot Danilo Di Luca last month.

The cycling federation said in a statement Tuesday it would pass on information from the International Cycling Union about Petacchi's doping tests to prosecutors at the Italian Olympic Committee.

UCI has asked the federation to establish whether Petacchi had broken doping regulations.

The 33-year-old won five stages during the 90th edition of the Giro"

Big names caught up in Giro scandal

Several leading Italian cyclists at this year's Giro D'Italia produced urine samples that showed 'anomalies', according to the Gazzetta dello Sport's website on Tuesday.

The suspicious samples were taken on May 30 after the Monte Zoncola stage.

The Gazzetta said although it was too early to tell if the tests were positive for doping, the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) had informed the UCI (International Cycling Union) and WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) and were seeking their advice before taking any action.

Last week the Corriere dello Sport reported that six riders, all of them Italian, were suspected of doping.

The paper said four of those six tests showed low natural hormone levels, similar to the levels found in adolescent children.

The Corriere dello Sport said the other two tests showed unusually high traces of salbutamol, a substance primarily used to treat asthma.

Salbutamol is a banned substance, but riders with asthma may use it to certain levels if they possess a medical certificate.

This year's Giro D'Italia was won by Danilo Di Luca.

Petacchi suspended by Milram now ..... because of the "rules" governing riders under investigation.  Looks like no Tour for him since the "investigation" by CONI will probably take more than a week or two.  That sucks ......
