United States
Ironman 70.3
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 5h 25m 48s
Overall Rank = 262/748
Age Group = M 30-34
Age Group Rank = 34/89
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at about 3:30am and loaded the car. I had a bowl of oatmeal, some coffee, and a banana. I wanted to eat more but dinner was still there. I actually broke a major rule for iron-distance pre-race prep. We ate dinner last night at 8:00pm. Normally a would have eaten at 4:00pm and relaxed for the rest of the night but we had a large group and couldn't get everyone together till then. In hindsight - screw everyone else and take care of myself.
Event warmup:

This went pretty well. I ran for about 10 minutes and then swam for about 10 minutes. The start of my wave was at 6:40am and it came up quickly.
Swim
  • 32m 4s
  • 1920 meters
  • 01m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

I went into this swim telling myself that it was a long race and I wanted to race a conservative swim. I did that but it was slower than I'd hoped. I made the mistake of wearing my swim cap over my goggles (which I never do) and ended up fighting to keep it on. I got trapped next to a couple of people that couldn't navigate so I ended up running over them....That was fun.
What would you do differently?:

Wear my swim cap under my goggles like I usually do. I could stand to practice with a swim cap more often as well.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

I chose to put my shoes on in transition because of the 8.9% hill immediately after the mounting line. It worked out well. T1 was a little slow but it helped me on the bike to stay relaxed and get into a rythem.
What would you do differently?:

Move quicker and work on my swim to run ability. I was staggering all over the place. The Stroke and Stride really helped this last year.
Bike
  • 2h 43m 28s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.55 mile/hr
Comments:

I raced the bike leg exactly the way I wanted to and it ended up being a little faster than I was expecting. I felt like it was a good course and I was prepared for all of it. I did get pretty stiff toward the end of it though.
What would you do differently?:

Not much....build more power on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

This went pretty well. No cramping off the bike, which was good. I was feeling a little full at this point.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 2h 05m 51s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

If you remember correctly... I broke a golden rule in iron-distance tris. I ate dinner way too late the night before. My digestive system was not ready for a long run and it fought me the whole time. In hindsight, I should have stopped at a portable toilet and taken care of it but my this point I was in pain and not thinking very clearly. Obviously not a steeler run for me. I CAN run this distance in a sub 8:30/mile pace! I guess the 5430 will be my proving ground.
What would you do differently?:

Pay attention to MY race needs the night before and politely disregard those of others.
Post race
Warm down:

I went to the bathroom of course!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of experience at this distance.

Event comments:

This was a good race and I might consider doing it next year. It will depend on where I am in my career at that point. Overall it was a well managed race and I had a great experience doing it.

Nice race. I looked at the swim split on race day and it showed you as having a 41' swim. I figured it was either wrong or something went seriously wrong out there. And I also considered renegging on our 'you swim, I run' trade off! Good to see it was an error. Keep working on that run and you'll have no problem with this distance.

Great race.  A time of 5:15 at the 5430 Long Course would be pretty sweet.  Hopefully you can get some good training in over the next several weeks to accomplish that.

Sounds brutal, and stomach issues suck more than anything else about racing.  Good to see the ride went well, but no surprise there really because your biking has been totally solid this year.  Nothing to do about the running but just keep at it I guess.  Maybe run a marathon this winter, it helped me a lot.

HOLY CRAP!! Well, looks like other BT'ers already expect this kind of speed out of you, but I might have to say it again: HOLY CRAP! Nice race, man ~ especially for your first time? And even with stomach issues you still busted out that pace after cruising around for like 50some miles going 20something miles per hour    NIIIICE WORK!

I like your finishing time, even with the obstacles, Matt! Good job pushing through the pain. I think you'll do very well in Boulder. See you there!

Definitely a solid race despite the stomach issues during the run.  And your run time was still respectable.  Assuming your nutrition is dialed in, you'll crush that time at the 5430 Long Course.  I am a bit surprised at your swim pace, but taking it easy on the swim may have saved you more time on the bike.  I dunno.  It's definitely something I'll be thinking about as the season goes on.  As for the bike - it's obviously your strength at this point.  I'm looking forward to getting the whole story in person.

Nice work Matt!  With the GI issues and the life-changes going on since the new job and all, it's tough to put a good race together, but you managed it as well as you could.  And yeah, be more selfish next time would you!!  You'll prove yourself at the 5430
