Master 3546 Millersville, MD | Subject: perpeteum = YUCK So after reading the hammer fueling book, I picked up some perpeteum to replace gatorade on my long rides/runs. YUCK! Please tell me it grows on you... or point me to a more palateable but similar (complex carb + protein) product. YUCK YUCK YUCK! I gagged every time I took a few drinks on my run last night. Creamsickle my a$$... Edited by JoshKaptur 2007-06-27 10:04 AM |

Resident Curmudgeon 25290 The Road Back | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK Hmmm, I find the flavor to be enjoyable, even mixed at high concentration (like a three-hour water bottle). There are certainly worse tasting products out there (e,g., Ultima). If you're looking to get rid of excess product I'd be happy to PM you my address. |

Expert 736 Longview, TX | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK I'm with you Bear, I like it and I've mixed it super strong for my rides. They do have a flavorless version of Perpetuem out now that you might try. I'm personally not a fan of gatorade, too many sugars and no protein. |

Master 1668 Cinnaminson, NJ | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK look into InfinIT...great product, you created it yourself, you have the flavor, the protein, salt... if for whatever reason you don't like it send it back for either a new product that you can adjust to add more flavor or whatever, or just get your money back... I have been using it for a few years and i love it... I use to user perpeteum and had the same problems, it was so hard to drink in the heat.. Edited by kleinrider 2007-06-27 11:49 AM |

Master 2808 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK It'll grow on you, but I toss in a Hammer gel to give it some flavor. It get's pretty bad tasting when it get's warm but I've gotten used to it. Gatorade should be fine on your long runs. I only use Perp on 3+ hr bikes as it's pretty spendy to use for the short stuff. |

I'm sure you, of all people, knows what works for you for long distance workouts. But, still, generally as far as I can tell: Sugars = carbohydrate = good. Protein = questionable value (may help user feel more "full" and, therefore, be of some use for long events)/possible digestive issues. |

I'm not gonna lie, I almost gagged when I was mixing them in the tent. Even the smell of it was almost too much, maybe there's some genetic predispostion to liking them. bts |

My first thought was to try to mask the flavor with a gel or something, but then I thought this would screw up the complex carb : protein ration I just I'm going to try to mix with crystal light tonight to see if that helps. |

Master 3546 Millersville, MD | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK It was 10 times better, though still not enoyable, made with pink lemonade crystal light (which I figured would have minimal impact on the fuel ratios that are supposedly so important). I did a long brick on saturday with it and have to say I felt fueled the entire time. |

Master 1478 Southwest Chicago 'burbs | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK By the third or fourth time I used it, I was no longer making the "ewwwwww...." face associated with being forced to eat brussel sprouts as a child. While it isn't my favorite drink in the world, it works very well for me and I've certainly developed a tolerance for the taste, even when I mix it really concentrated. |

Veteran 299 | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK Hammers HEED serves the same purpose as gatorade but perp. is a little different since it incorperated protien. anyways gatorade is toooo sugary for me.. I find it lacks alot when compared to everything else out there! |

Member 52 Cary, NC | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK i mixed up my first batch of heed for a 100k ride yesterday. i have to say, i enjoyed it and felt hydrated and energized slurping 20oz of that plus 2 luna bars and a fig newton (lots of water too). i ordered a sampler of recoverite for the post-workout refueling. hope that works out for me too. i buy the hype - no extra crap, high quality ingredients. i think they gotta be doing something right. |

Extreme Veteran 477 | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK I've been using Perp for my 3+ hour rides and love it. I actually look forward to the next time I take a drink. Be sure to follow with plenty of water. I love not having to take Gatorade...I agree...to sugary for the long rides. Not only do I like Perp's taste, it works! |

Champion 5495 Whizzzzzlandia | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK It's on my list of things to buy and try. coredump swears by it... I've tried Heed and I wasn't really impressed with it. It got all foamy. And tasted like weak vanilla water. I think I drank Perpetuem by mistake once. Never on purpose. I've always been a Gatorade kind of gal. I'm willing to try something else... and I figure if I hate it, I'll let Dumpster have it. I've yet to order it, though... (!) |

Member 46 WASHINGTON, DC | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK Bought some things through the HammerNutrition web site and they gave me free samples of HEED and Perpeteum. I love the company, just love 'em, love 'em. Hammer Gel's use 'em all the time. Race Caps too! So I have this packet of Perpeteum and the instructions says use "SCOOPS" and it didn't come with scoops. I'm like, what's the measurement of a "Scoop" and so I estimated that the whole Perpeteum packet in a 20 oz water bottle should be right? So, I mix and taste it. This is the Orange/Creamsickle flavor. Now I've been drinking Accelerade for a year now, and tried Infiniti and those were all palatable, good almost. THIS STUFF TASTES LIKE PANCAKE BATTER!! If I was to take Bisquick and water and mix it, it would taste like Perpetuem. No seriously, I'm not exaggerating. My girlfriend took a swig to taste it, and she spit it out looking at me in horror. I slowly drank it all throughout the ride, but didn't like it one bit. Did I do something wrong with the mix? Is it always that bad? |

Master 3546 Millersville, MD | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK Yes - that's what I think too. Not sure how much was in the packet, but the recommended concentration varies greatly based on your weight, the weather, and whether you are going to drink the "one hour bottle" or are going to use the "multi-hour bottle" but also drink water. Like I said, mixing it with crystal light in a one-hour bottle helps greatly... but it's still far from enjoyable. |

Wouldn't it bump up the sugars too much to make that a viable alternative for training? Just wondering. |

Master 3546 Millersville, MD | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK Yeah, what s/he said... unless nutri-sweet or whatever artificial sweetener is in it causes some wierd reaction, but I doubt it. I definitely think pink lemonade is their best flavor, and I've tried them all. |

Expert 1074 Madison, MS | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK I am an Endurox fan myself. It's technically a recovery drink; however, I mix it up a little weak for my long rides and it works perfectly. I hate eating foods while working out/racing and quickly get sick of gels. The more "nutrionally balanced" form of Endurox (more than, say, Gatorade) seems to provide me with the fuel I need, especially on the long, hot days. The only flavor I can tolerate is orange. |

Member 46 WASHINGTON, DC | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK kvessey, I use Endurox too, but strictly as a recovery drink. The Protein levels are "whey" too high (pun intended), and I couldn't imagine drinking it during a ride, too thick for me. Have you tried Accelerade? Or Cytosport, Enervit, Powerbar Endurance? I'm sure you have, but maybe you like your Protein levels higher. Infiniti has custom formula's that you can make that you can dial up the Protein levels, people seem to like that one. |

Extreme Veteran 458 Denver, CO | Subject: RE: perpeteum = YUCK THIS STUFF TASTES LIKE PANCAKE BATTER!! That's exactly what I said the first time I tried it. Actually, I said "crepe batter" since it's a hint sweeter than pancake batter, but still, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that. I DO use it though, and it works well for me. The crystal light is a good suggestion. I'll give it a try! |
