What kind of blender is everyone using for their smoothies/shakes? I have an old Oster but sometimes my protein powder get stuck to the sides and never mixes in well. What features are important in a good blender and are there any tips on making smoothies fast without having to scrape the sides?

The blender I use is an Oster, but I don't really think the brand is that important. What I looked for is variable speeds and motor settings. I have a high and low end (ten different speeds) which enables me to blend anything together...I could probably liquify the thigh bone of a yak if I wanted to.

**Make sure your container holds at least a quart after blending. I make my smoothies a quart at a time so I always have something in the fridge.

One other thing, make sure the top of your blender has a removable center! If it does, you can pour the protein powder in while it's blending...no sticking to the sides!

I like the blenders that have that big stick thing (have no idea what it is called) that can be placed into the blender through the hole on the top. It helps stir up and move around the ice and big pieces of fruit while the blender is running.

Like most things, the cheaper the blender, the quicker the thing is going to burn out, especially if you use it a lot.

To keep your protein from getting stuck, poor in protein powder last after your ice and other yummies are crushed and smooth

I bought a Vita Mix blender (it's kind of a splurge) and it's amazing! It has all the features everyone on this thread is saying you want a blender to have plus it has 3 horsepower (not kidding!). I make my morning smoothies in it and never have problems with the powder sticking on the sides. I also love it because I can make tons of other things in it as well besides smoothies.  It comes with a nice recipe book too when you purchase one! =)

Which model do you have? I was looking at one of these but they cost so much! I saw the 5000 model on their website but I can only find the 4500 on Amazon and such. I hear you have to go to a professional restaurant supplier to get the good ones?

We have the Vita Mix 5000. It was a bit expensive but has been totally worth it to us. (It was our anniversary present to ourselves.) We've saved a ton of money from not have to buy smoothies for two every morning and we've also been able to make our smoothies with ingredients other smoothie places don't carry (i.e. local bee pollen to help with our allergies!). We got our blender from the Vita Mix website (vitamix.com). We also make tons of other things in this blender from our on raw foods diet recipes as well as from the recipe book that comes with the blender. Like I said before, it is a bit of a splurge but we have not regretted it at all. It's actually been one of the best purchases we've made yet!
