Subject: the hazards of trail running during hunting season
we just got back from another camping trip. this time we were in central wisconsin, camping with my family (girls, hubby, dog) brothers in law, one sister in law, some friends, etc. (etc. = two other dogs). did a shorter than expected trail run on saturday afternoon. either i ran 3 miles in 20 minutes, or the map was off. so, i spoke with a ranger (who happened to be from my home town and graduated from the same high school) who gave me the low down on the real distances. ANYWAY...

went for a 7+ mile run this morning. sun coming up, mist rising off the lake, dew everywhere... perfect morning for a trail run. went to look at the map again to check my planned route. noticed a 'hunting season - watch for hunters' sign on the park bulletin board. hmm. okay. no hunting in minnesota state parks, so this was unexpected. should this be of concern? hmmm. anyway, off i went.

as i finished the first mile, i heard some shots, but there were waaaay off in the distance. finished my first 3 mile figure 8ish loop. as i started the second i was feeling really good. naughty me, i decided to do three figure 8 loops instead of the 2 i had planned (so, 9 miles instead of 6). came around the top of the second loop...working up a small hill and...

KAPOW!!!!!!!

about 5 feet away! it was probably more like 500 feet away, maybe 500 yards away, but still. my heart rate monitor took just a few seconds to register a whopping 192 bpm! i've never seen THAT before. did a quick scan around but didn't see anyone. took off with some pretty good adrenaline flowing. decided not to do that section of the loop again. redid the lower section of the loop twice (which, according to the signs, was an area of the park that was off-limits for hunting). over all, a great run - 7.2 miles and all parts of me intact!

Wow autumn!!! Glad you made it out unscathed. That seems weird that they would even ALLOW hunters to shoot where there is a trail near by! Beware...it's wabbit season, no DUCK season! ;-)

Wow! That's scary.  But, at least, you now know your max HR.   Perhaps you should run while wearing a hunter orange vest.

wild turkey and prairie chicken season! who knew? i was surprised that they even allowed hunting in a state park. in minnesota, hunting is allowed in state forests, but if a state park allows hunting, they call it a state 'recreation area' instead of a park.

i thought my max was closer to 188, but maybe not! i had been thinking about getting a high visibility vest for night running. didn't stop to think it might help keep me from getting shot too! kill two birds with one rifle, i mean stone.

Sounds like good motivation to run faster

I do a lot of trail running but as hunting is now banned in England I don't need to worry about been shot. There is still the problem of tripping up, getting lost and as soon as your feet get wet from a puddle the blisters strike!!

I have the same issue going on here. Dove season started a couple of weeks ago, and deer season is right around the corner.I've been hearing target practice for a while now. So I'll offer up some tips

1. Wear blaze orange when in the woods during hunting season. It is readily available. I have a vest I bought at the local wally-world for about 6 bucks.

2. Don't wear white. Despite protests to the contrary there are plenty of drunken idiots with more firepower than brains out in the woods. They'll take a shot at anything white. Saying this I know is flame bait, and the vast majority of hunters are upstanding responsible types. BUT it only takes one idiot to kill you.

3. Make a lot of noise, human noise. sing ouit loud (helps keep you areobic too) wear bells, talk, carry tic-tacs (Seinfield reference)

4. Plan on being in the woods on Sunday if your state (like Virginia) does not allow hunting on Sunday.

5. Familiarize yourself with your particular states game laws and hunting season schedules (usually available on-line)

be safe.

(I'm JOKING, Joking, joking)

Hunting accidents where people get shot and/or killed are not all that uncommon around here. There are probably 4-6 shootings per year in Virgina (wild guess based on local news reports) Many of them are not shootings. People falling out of their tree stands are probably mere common. Falls don't make the news unless someone gets killed. Then there's the double whammy of shooting oneself while climbing into a treestand and falling to one's death........the possibilities and permutations of carnage are limitless, and that does not even begin to take into account the four-wheeler crashes.

it's a dangerous would out there

yea, i was wearing a white shirt and a black vest and tights yesterday. not the best color choices. we have bear bells and i'll seek out some day-glo orange clothing if i know i'll be running anywhere near hunting areas. now that i'm back home, the places i trail run i KNOW are safe, so no worries there (well, just the old worries - sprained ankle, mad-men, rabid racoons etc.)

its the same here. there are always a few accidental shootings (and again, same here - guy falls out of deer stand, lands on gun, shoots self). a friend of mine who hunts with his dad and brothers, but who brings his camera instead of a gun, was braised by a bullet a couple years ago. not from one of his family members, but by some loon who shot at anything that moved.

i know and love a lot of hunters, and i worry every hunting season. for me, no way. fishing, yea, but no guns. if i ever decided to hunt, i would learn to bow hunt or something. i used to work at a ymca summer camp where one of the classes we taught was riflery. i had a really hard time with it and if my campers wanted to learn, i asked someone else to teach them. i think if you're going to handle a gun, knowing how to do so is very important. however, the y camp i worked at was over 100 years old and the only death - on the riflery range.

Hunting isn't banned here, we have just banned hunting with dogs.
However, the places you can hunt are very limited (mostly it is private land) as most of us don't have enough land to hunt in it's not that common. I think maybe you could hunt snails in my garden.

Our national parks are hunting free, at least I've never seen any. The only people to get hurt are the rich toffs shooting each other so we don't worry about that.

John 0026,

Sadly, there are accidental shootings. My husband knows someone who was shot and seriously injured when a hunter thought the man and his four wheeler were a deer.

I was out on my 12 miler on Sunday morning and I could hear plenty of gunshots ringing out in the distance. That was plenty close enough for me. What it must have been like to you. I can't imagine.
Glad it didn't turn into anything serious

O.K. I hope the moral of the story is that you won't be running in the woods during hunting season! Please don't be thinking that wearing an orange vest will solve this problem. This will only be an extra step that paramedics will have to perform following your shooting!

Yes we have every right to be in the woods, even near a trail. But that doesn't stop accidents from happening, even if it wasn't our fault. You'll still be dead!

Why am I so passionate about it? Its an unecessary risk to take

Orange!!!! When I go hiking during hunting season, I wear a bright orange polartec sweatshirt. I also bought myself a poopload of bright orange hankerchiefs. When my dog is with me, he wears a few. I'll put one on my head. And I jabber the whole hike long. I sing (my favorite, Grateful Dead "Dire Wolf" , talk to my dog, talk to the trees, etc. I've lived in hunter-infested mountains my entire life and this has kept me safe thus far (pretty good, considering how much I love to hike in the fall!).

Also, I've known a lot of hunters in my day and every one I've known is responsible and concientious. Every shooting I've heard of, the victim was unfortunately not properly clothed.

i totally agree. i didn't even realize that hunting was allowed in wisconsin state parks until i was ready to head out for the run. in minnesota, it isn't allowed. there are PLENTY of places here where i can trail run without worry of being shot (at least not by a hunter ).
