Total Time = 1h 37m 26s
Overall Rank = 61/65
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 8/8
Pre-race routine:

We drove two hours to get there the mornng of so we left at 4:15am. That was fine because I was not sleeping.
Event warmup:

We had to pick up our race packets and get our chip. The other women there were very friendly. It was a beautiful day, too. I was surprisingly relaxed and S. and I were laughing. I kept talking to "Little Baby Jesus." (See the new Will Ferrel movie.)
Swim
  • 11m 45s
  • 300 yards
  • 03m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

I have to get in the pool more. This is the part of River Cities which makes me the most nervous.
What would you do differently?:

Train, Train, and, oh, yeah, Train some more
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

I thought I did this just fine considering I was a bit taxed from my crummy swim.
What would you do differently?:

Not sit down to put my shoes on and wear different socks.
Bike
  • 43m 51s
  • 10 miles
  • 13.68 mile/hr
Comments:

My bike computer was not working, but I was pleased with the pace. I really thought I was only about 12mph because I was worried about not having anything for the run. Officers were stopping traffic for us, and one stopped about four cars way before I was there. This was as I was turning the last corner into the straight away to dismount at the transition area. I'm glad he did because I pushed it and passed two other riders before dismount. Had the bike computer been working and I had seen 13.7, I would've at least been pushing for 14.
What would you do differently?:

Not be so concerend about energy conservation for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

Could've been faster.
Run
  • 37m 58s
  • 2 miles
  • 18m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

I wound up walking because of the surface. The rocks were hard on my ankle, so I tried to run in the grass along the side of the road, but it was uneven. Very disappointing. S. came out to run with me, and she was wonderful as usual. She ran the final .25 in with me. I loved it.
What would you do differently?:

Regardless of the terrain, I still don't think I was ready for the run part. I need to keep running even if it is a run/walk.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being a rookie and not training like I should.

Event comments:

It was a great first race atmosphere, and S. was a wonderful mentor and..."stakeholder".

Performance: Below average
Suit: Tri Suit
Course: This was an indoor swim. The pool had five lanes which meant you had to swim the first lane twice to reach the 300m swim. We were lined up according to our times, so I was towards the last. S. was way up front because she's a fish. In the beginning everyone was doing the freestyle. But, by the time we got down into my group, we were seeing everything from the backstroke to freestlye to breast stroke. Yes, I did a little of it all. This is my biggest area to work on. Note: Athletes come in all shapes and sizes. One of the best swim strokes I saw was on one of the biggest women there. NEVER judge a book by it's cover.

Congratulations on your first!!!!  Excellent!  Loved the part about passing a couple others on the way into T2.  Awesome!  Looks like you are hooked and ready for more, eh?

You were AWESOME!! I am so proud of you for finishing and competing in your first (of many) triathlons. I'm sorry that I didn't get to see your swim, but it was fun to see you in T1 coming out of the pool area. That is one nice thing about those time trial starts....I get to think I'm finishing ahead of everyone when I'm not!

My favorite part was running with you though. That was fun and I loved that Bridget got a picture of us running together. Definitely a keeper.

You're going to be fine for RiverCities. I'll be there right along with you for the run again.....if you'll have me!

I'm looking forward to all our training sessions leading up to RiverCities.

Oh btw.....LLP1970....you ARE a TRIATHLETE!!
