Subject: Race shirt = fraud?

I did a half iron a few weeks ago.  Okay.. I admit: I didn't do the whole thing myself - I did the bike portion of the race, while the rest of my team did the swimming and running.  Yes, I did a relay.

It was a tough race: the bike course was very challenging, despite the fact that it was shortened by 12k due to last minute road permit issues.  But make no mistake: I was out there for just shy of 3 hours, not the 5 or 6 (or 7 or 8) hours that the individual participants endured.

So.. do I have the right to wear the coveted hoodie?  I've worn it out in public only once, and while I was proud of my accomplishment and the training that got me there, I also felt a bit like a fraud.

Wear what you want to. You participated in the event so why not wear the shirt?

Wear it.  Don't wear it.  The hoodie won't be offended.

You did your part for a team though so I'd be wearing it if I was in your bike shoes.

Did the same thing, rode the bike leg of a relay team at a HIM back in April Had a great time with some great folks and finished in third place among the relay teams. I don't hesitate to wear my shirt, except now it's summer and the shirt is a long-sleeve CoolMax.

And I was only out there for 2:38, in gale-force winds!

Cool

Edit: I take it back. You can't wear the shirt until you finish your race report!

Wear it.  Who cares.  Even if you do an event and don't finish, you at least trained for it.  I have a shirt from a race that was cancelled and I wear it all the time.

If we were talking an M-dot tattoo then the discussion would be a little different, but I say wear the shirt.

It's a Tshirt and you paid for it with your entry fee. Wear it as you see fit.

It's a shirt. So wear it. Stop over-analyzing things and relax. Enjoy your accomplishment.

Hey I wore mine to run yesterday, too.  We must be doing one of those "Cyber Group Runs".

Didn't you get a volunteers' shirt?  Or did they give you a racers' shirt?

Yes! Wear it with pride and when someone notices it and asks you, tell them you were part of a relay team and you did the bike portion. Tell them about your experiences. You should be proud but hold off on the Mdot tattoo.

It only matters how you feel. So if it makes you feel like a fraud, don't where it.

It wouldn't make me feel like a fraud. I would think about it this way; if someone in th grocery store says, "Hey, you did that race, I did it too," I can say yes, I was part of a relay team, or I was a volunteer, or I did but I collapsed during the run while pushing as hard as I could. I don't know any triathletes that wouldn't respect those efforts.

I imagine an Ironman doesn't want to ask about an Ironman finisher shirt and hear, "Nah, I bought this at a yard sale."

Since your bike portion was shortened by about 13%, cut 13% off the bottom of the shirt and then wear it.

I got all three as well and wore the long sleeve one yesterday...must be cyber group something as I didn't run yesterday....nice shirts and hats!

Wear the shirt..I did a HIM relay I wear the shirt...if someone talks about the race with me I usually say I did a relay as not to mislead them.

Ask the olympian who was the alternate in a 4x100m freestyle relay and who only swam in preliminaries whether he feels it's right to wear his competition clothes in public.

He DID go to the olympics afterall.

3 shirts for each volunteers.  No wonder the registration fee is so expensive.
