Subject: My first tri coming up in two days!
Hi all, my name is Lisa. I was a competitive swimmer the last 14 years of my life and decided it was time for a change of pace. I am in graduate school so I have a flexible schedule to allow for good training time. I have been training for 7 weeks and will be doing my first triathlon on July 4th. I'm super nervous for it. I have no idea what to expect.

Do people usually go out too hard and just bomb on their first tri or do they go out too easy and have a lot of energy at the end?

It's a little uncomforting to not know what to expect. I initially thought the triathlon I signed up for would be smaller with only 150 people or so but I found out this year there are 440 people. That seems intimidating. I just can't imagine that many people all in one spot with one goal. My easier goal is to finish and my more challenging goal is to finish in less then 1:40:00. I just don't want to be last. Alright, well, I hope I'm not a lurker anymore and if anyone has some good beginner tips, you should drop them my way ASAP!

Nice to meet you all.

Why hello there Lisa!  Thanks for introducing yourself, and SUPER GOOD LUCK on your first tri.

Most importantly: HAVE FUN.  Really.  On your first tri it's probably better to go out easy (you can always speed up later!) and just really have fun and feel good doing it and finish wanting to do more and better.

Hi Lisa! I think I read in another thread that you're from MN?  Welcome!  There are a bunch of us from MN on BT.  Check out the MN forum, too!  Good luck this week!

Thanks for the wishes. I'm currently living in Minneapolis. I love how many races there are to choose from up here.

Good luck on your first tri. You will do fine especially if you are already a good swimmer.  The key is to have fun.

I think for my first triathlon I did alright. I managed to achieve the goals I set for myself, by finishing, not getting last and going under a 9:30 pace for my run. I am proud of my swim, overall I got, 35/397. My bike was definitely the weakest and I need to work on that. It was somewhat discouraging seeing all these people pass me, but it also kept me motivated. I guess I just need to put more time in on my bike. I am also proud of myself for helping another person out during the race. Everyone on these boards talked about the comradrie so I figured a few minutes off my time weren't worth leaving someone else possibly stranded out on the bike course. When I crossed the finish line I felt like I was going to puke which was a good thing, that means that I tried my best. I think I am going to do another one in August to try and get more experience and then set up an A race for late September to see if I can pull together 11 more weeks of training before the season is over. I have a lot to learn but I find myself excited to work out and learn as much as I can.
