Any "big" race (IM, 70.3, larger oly.) will have the 30-34's taking most of the glory and posting the fastest times, then the 35 - 44 range .........

But in smaller races it runs the gammut with whoever shows up that day.

monkeyboy64 - 2007-07-04 2:47 AM Around here, the guy who wins all the sprints is in the 40-44 AG, which also seems to be the most competetive generally. At 42, that gives me three years to build a tri base to move up to the next AG and have a slightly better chance. 40-44 seems to be the nexus of athletic ability with time and money for training and equipment.

Except that all those guys in the 40-44 AG will be moving up right along with you.

There many be two reasons why the older age groups are faster.

There have been studies done over the years in regards to endurance athletes. If I recall correctly the high level performers peak in their early to mid thirties. If they keep training their performace drops less then 1% a year as they age.

There has been studies done with people that start training for endurance sports later in life that are not in good shape. Most improve thier performance significantly for the first 5 years before their performance improvements slow. If they keep at it, the performance level drops only about 1% from their personal peak as they age.

As many of you have noticed as I have, the performace of older age groups is as high or higher then some of the younger ones. Those age groups are being filled with a combination of both types of athletes. Some of the top triathletes in the 1980's and 1990's are still competing. For example Dave Scott ( who is 53) was at a triathlon I did last year. He was first out of the water and off the bike. Only two guys in their early 30's caught him in the run. He was third overall well ahead of men half his age.

Also many folks that do not get into endurance sports until they are in their late 30's, 40's, or even thier 50's. are starting to reach thier personal peaks after a few years of training so thier times are getting better then some younger age groups as well.

When I was in my 20s running bored me too much to keep it up. Plus I sucked at it. Now I enjoy the meditative calmness of the huffing and puffing. I guess aging/maturing helps with the mental discipline part of endurance training too. Plus I don't mind anymore that I suck at it. And if it gets to me once in awhile I just remind myself that 90% of all women my age couldn't even run around the block!

Yeah, but I've only done 5 tris, so I'll be building up my endurance and speed for those few years.

Old age and treachery often triumph over youth and enthusiasm.  The secret is to outlive your competition.  Next year I'll be moving up to 60-64.  I won't be any faster, and everyone will still beat me to the finish line.  But at least there will be fewer of them that do so.

At a local 5K yesterday, #3-5 overall were all M40-44.  #6 & #7 were M35-39 and #8 was M50-54.

Maybe instead of that garage or carbon bike, you should undergo some ego reduction treatments. You definately come in first in the self aggrandizement category for any age group, despite the use of smiley faces.

Birkierunner - 2007-07-03 7:39 PM

As a fairly competitive 46 year old (1:17 half marathon a couple weeks ago) that attended grad school for way too many years and have been running continuously since about 1976 (this is only my second full season of tris) ...my wife and I didn't want kids.....I have a very tiny violin I can play for you younger guys to soothe your sorrows     Stop looking for excuses and get out there and train

Although I have the money to buy a carbon TT bike my wife would rather have a garage for our house, so I'm stuck with a crappy road bike with stock wheels and clip-ons and still go 23+ mph in shorter races and love to pass younger guys with carbon TT bikes and Zipp discs...so there goes the money argument.  Its all about your engine, not the tri toys you own.

(I just couldn't resist with this tongue in cheek reply....although the part about loving to kick younger guys @sses was serious....it's not intended at anyone personally   )

That about sums it up perfectly! In my 20s I used to loathe getting passed by 30 somethings in a triathlon - now I LOVE to be the 30 something passing the 20 somethings - just love it. :-)

As someone who has surely been passed by Birkierunner in these MN races, he has a point. Put in the time training, and you'll see the results.

The other thing that I think happens is the field gets "purified" as people age. Here is progression I often see at my little Sprint races:

20's: Lots of sports junkies who were on thier HS football team 7 years ago, along with a handful of serious beginner triathletes
30's: Lots of guys with a wife and 2 kids at home, want to prove they aren't getting old and fat. And that same group of serious traithletes who are getting better with time.
40's: A couple guys whose teenage kids convinced them to do a tri, and that same group of serious triathletes who have gotten really good.
50's: Just the good guys, and they can fly!. All the rest have quit. Tough field!

No sure where this poster is visiting from but she is typing words I don't even know the definition of: aggrandizement

I better dust off my dictionary! Sheesh! The poster must have gotten passed by one of us old guys this weekend :-) - he/she seems grumpy...

You may wanna take about 3 steps back.  This (including your first post) isn't the way BT works.

How about a BT based survey of PR's and their respective age groups to put this issue to bed! I have no doubt us older folks will aquit ourselves very nicely!

Hey, you still have a few more years to go before you can be considered "us older folk"!!!

Top three in the Cleveland Triathlon Sprint Distance this past weekend.

1st place: age 46
2nd place: age 43
3rd place: age 53

Now the Oly distance had a younger group in the top three, but I found those sprint results very interesting.
