I've been "running" now for about 4 months.  I've gone from fighting through a 5K to 8 or 9 mile runs.  The major problem now is I have to "go" about 10 minutes into it.  I get real gasy and then it hits me.  My stomach turns and I really need to start running someplace.  This doesn't happen all the time nor does it happen in any other aspect of my life, just the run.  I've tried watching what I eat but its tough to tell whats causing it.  It happens both on morning and evening runs also.  Any thoughts.  Should I start mixing in a little pepto to my pre-run water.

Ahhhh, the Trots. Lots of experience with this. Train your body to go before you run, and if you're going again during the run the reasearch says (don't know where this reasearch is) that is related to dehydration. Drink more, often...and drink more.

I have that also in the morning.
I try and get up a little earlier before the run and go to the toilet at least twice before leaving. That helps me.

Yes the trots.  I have also read an article saying it can be a mild case of lactose intolerance.  I was having the same issue, and cut out all dairy and now my problem is gone (I would go before the run and still have the issue).  Try cutting out dairy for a week and see if anything changes.

The first leg of my morning run is a loop that takes me into the main portion of my run. Three to five minutes and I run past my house...if I have to go, I go in, if not, I continue my run...

Ah! I get this too. I have never heard anyone else say this before, besides me.

For me it's not lactose intolerance...I gave up milk and cheese and all dairy for a few months, and nothing got better (so I went back to eating my cheese and drinking my milk, because I love it!).

I'd appreciate any other theories.

I've always thought I was lactose intolerent.  Since training I've become regular and thought it was my much more healthier style of eating.  If I cut all diary that also means whey protien as well.  My sister takes something to help with her intolence, I wonder if it will help me.

Oh good! Other people who are in this with me! I am new to running, too - and there is now a standing joke in my family that someone has to follow me and bring a bread-bag along to pick up after me! (No - it hasn't ACTUALLY happened... yet!)

I hadn't thought of changing my diet (I eat pretty healthy already) nor making sure I'm more hydrated before a run. Cool - I'll try it, too! Thanks for bringing this up! Sue Ellen
