Subject: Lakes north of Detroit to practice in
Does anyone know of any lakes that are decent to swim in north of Detroit?...Really anywhere that has a public access point and has decent water conditions. I've been swimming in Cass Lake, but there have now been 2 dead people in the lake in the last month and it's making me nervous.

How far north?

I swim at Holly Rec and Seven Lakes.

I just swim the bouy line in Heron Lake at Holly Rec.

I swim a 500 yard loop in Sand Lake at Seven Lakes. It has very few weeds, and its low traffic due to it being set back in the campground.

I swim in trout lake in island lake state park. (exit 151 on 96) It is about a quarter mile across and you can swim the whole thing. Take a friend though as there are no lifeguards. I haven't run into any dead people there yet, but you never know.

Three good suggestions already made.

Stony creek has a 100m swim area; you just do laps back and forth.

Brown Trout Lake (at Island Lake) is 1/4 mile across; however, you can swim the perimeter (about 20-50 ft from shore) and be in clear water yet able to touch most of the way around. It's a little less than a mile all the way around, and a great swim.  And since you can touch most of the way, it's a little lower risk. But watch out for the brown trout.  

Never swum Holly, so that's new to me. Sounds cool, though.

heron lake's bouy line is about 375 yards long.

i do mtb rides then swim about once every other week. let me know if anyone wants to join in some day after work.

I live in Ferndale, so Holly is probably too far, Stony Creek is probably good for brick work on the weekends when I have more time to drive. There are so many lakes in MI but it's frustrating that I just don't know of any that have a public access. Thanks everyone for some suggestions.

I finally swam in that Trout Lake this morning. It's super nice! I can't believe I never checked it out before.

Also, for the original poster, I live in Royal Oak, and getting to Kensington/Island Lake only takes just over 20 minutes. It's all highway.
