Subject: How long to get speed back after dropping one sport for almost 2 years
Due to back problems, I dropped swimming and more than doubled my bike mileage (5200 last year, over 3000 so far this year).

I've taken up swimming again, and of course my times have suffered. The 400 that I would always warm up with used to take me around 7 minutes, now it's about 7:40. My 100 free is about 10 seconds slower.

And I'm registered for the Tiburon Mile on Sept. 16.

Anyone else drop swimming in favor of cycling and then return to swimming? BTW, I don't run.

Honestly, everyone is different. Its going to depend on how much training you can handle without injury, your nutrition, rest... a lot of factors. This is also that answer noone wants to read. Sooo.... if you are looking for a definite number, Id say 3 weeks

What I have noticed though is that increasing my cycling intensity makes me a faster swimmer and runner. Hopefully you will experience the same. Personally, I think if you only went up 40 seconds over 400 after 2 years of no swimming, I think thats pretty good.

Most of my cycling involves two fast 14 mile rides each day (my commute). A lot of all-out traffic sprints too.

Today, I did my warmup 400 in 7:32. So things are indeed looking up.

I took an extended break from running after our first child and then got into these crazy tris. and my 5k times are nowhere near where I was before. So hard to say without completly focusing on that sport if I will ever get back there.

Honestly, if you are only talking :10 seconds per 100 I would not worry that much.  In a 1/2 mile sprint you are talking 1:20sec and they way you have been biking you should be able to make that up in a hurry.  It sounds like you are a decent swimmer just not done it lately.  If I took 2 years off I would probably swim a minute a 100 slower.
