GREENFIELD - Two bicyclists were brought to Franklin Medical Center last night after being struck by a car while peddling down Leyden Road.

Police Sgt. Ralph D. Odom said the men were hit by a 1997 Ford driven by Shirley Webb of Greenfield, at about 7:30 p.m.

Odom said the men were headed south on Leyden Road, and Webb was traveling north.

Injured were Thomas Graney of Deerfield and Michael Szteliga of Turners Falls. Both were brought by ambulance to Franklin Medical Center, Odom said.

Webb has not been charged, but the accident remains under investigation, and charges may be forthcoming, Odom said.

Graney and Szteliga were traveling with other cyclists on a route that is a favorite among cyclists, Odom said.

Leyden Road runs north to south through town, running parallel to the Green River.

Odom said Leyden Road is hilly, and is often used as a training ground for competitive cyclists.

There were no other injuries.

Odom said patrolman Richard Logan is investigating the accident.

I ride with these guys.  This road is part of the Greenfield Triathlon course.  I called the bike shop this morning and heard that the most injured one, Tom, has a broken leg and collar bone but it looks like he'll make a full recovery.  Phew.  I'm just so pissed at the woman right now that I cannot speak.

Glad they will make a full recovery, but broken stuff takes awhile to heal.

I hope they arrest and prosecute the person...come on the driver should have been on the other side of the road...takes some stupidity to cross the median and then strike folks on the other side of the other lane.

I'm feeling more and more lucky I only seperated my shoulder and didn't break my collarbone as I wouldn't be able to do what I am now a month post crash.

Poor Tom, and his pal.  This sucks!  I remember the road from Last year's Greenfield Tri and it's a nice one.   Cyclists should be able to ride it in safety.

And I agree with Kathy.  WTH is up with a driver crossing lines to strike cyclists on the other side traveling in the opposite direction!?  Was the driver on drugs?  Ancient?  Stupid??

I was driving home from my ride today and there were 2 cyclists in front of me taking up the WHOLE ROAD. I couldn't get around them. If I were coming the other direction, it's them or a tree.
