Subject: Change of course

I'm stepping away from triathlon for a while. Ever since IMFL, I've been at sort of a loss as to what to do next. I have been thoroughly unexcited about training from more triathlons because, at least at this point, I'm pretty satisfied with what I've accomplished.

I've had a pretty long history of needing new challenges. Here's my athletic history since college:

  • '93-'95: sprint triathlon/running/masters swimming
  • '96-'98: mountain biking/masters swimming
  • '99-'02: sprint triathlon, a little running, a little road cycling
  • '02-'07:marathon/HIM--IM triathlon

So call me Mr. Short Attention Span. Every couple of years, i get the itch to try something new (or at least to go back to something I've grown to miss). So now it's that time again. For the foreseeable future, it's going to be swimming and cyclocross. I'm going to (attempt at least) to get back in good swimming shape with the goal of swimming well at the '08 USMS Nationals in Austin next April.

And as far as cyclocross goes, it's something that I've always wanted to do. I've always had good technical MTB skills (I raced Expert class back in CA), so I think it's something I can do well at. The Georgia Cross series kicks off in October, and I'm planning on competing.

So that's it--I (finally) have a plan. I'll still be running a bit (I'll need to in order to be in good CX shape--especially since I'll be racing single-speed), and I won't rule out a sprint tri here and there (especially if I can race fixed-gear). But for now at least, I'm officially hanging up my multisport hat.

Don't count on my CoJ presence to change, though.

That's all that really matters, right?   Good luck with all your new goals!

I call bullshit unless they have naked cyclocross.

Anyway, good luck in your competitive pursuits.  Oh, and 14 years of endurance athletics doesn't make you Mr. Short Attention span.

I'm still doing the nekkid tri...on my cross bike. Does that count?

14 years: I didn't even list the 16 years of competitive simming before that.

I don't see how that is "hanging up your multisport hat" when you will still be running, biking and swimming.  Just because your races don't inlcude all three doesn't mean you aren't still doing tri training.   You gotta make sure it is still exciting an fun for yourself, or what is the motivation to train?

Seriously, Jim, if anything you've shown an ability to stay committed to fitness/endurance sports by varying your experiences.  That's to be commended, not criticized as flighty or inconsistent.  We should all be so lucky.  I can only hope that in another 11 years my athletic resume is as prolific.

Hell, variety and trying something different are the whole essence of triathlon's appeal, aren't they?  No surprise that the people attracted to tris are attracted to other pursuits as well.

I hear ya Jim.  I seem to go in two year cycles for my hobbies.  IMWI will be cap 2.5 years of tris so we'll see what next year brings.  Maybe lots of mountain biking.

One of the elite triathletes here in Virginia, David Glover, who is always looking for new and interesting challenges, tried the Canadian Ski Marathon a while back. It is a 50-mile race over two days. He (wrongly) assumed that because he was an elite triathlete, he'd be able to do the race sans problem.  By elite, I mean sub-9.

Now Jim, I doubt you'd have much chance to do much skiing, being where you are, but this thread made me think of David's experience in the ski marathon, and if nothing else, it makes for an interesting read.

Moral of the story, I guess... you'll find something to motivate and challenge yourself, no doubt.
