Hello All who are doing the TOBAY Sprint August 19th. Thought I'd start a thread for us.  Is everyone aware of the FREE training sessions that Runner's Edge has organized? Some are during the week, others are on the weekend.  I'm probably attending the August 12th session at 6am.  I've heard horror stories about Moore's Hill Rd and want to see it prior to race and attempt to climb it.  Anyway, look forward to seeing how your training is going and seeing you on race day.  Here's link to Schedule of training sessions on the actual course:

I'm probably hitting this Sunday's (Aug 5) training session with my sister if anyone is interested.  I believe it starts at 6:15.  I have heard horror stories of Moore's Hill Rd and I must see it before race day.

Too bad they moved Tuesdays bike to Thursday in turn canceling Thursdays swim. Oh well, my husband and I will definitely checking out that infamous bike course on Thursday.

is there anyone around that has done this race before that can chime in? it'd be great to hear about the course.

and those of you that make it up to tomorrow's practice, please post your thoughts.

i plan on making some of the upcoming practice sessions, but the more info the better

this is not only my first time doing oyster bay, it's my first tri ever . . . i'm an inexperienced rider on a tired old machine. also, i live on the south shore of LI so my training hasn't involved many hills.

should i expect the same thing from the run?

knowing is half the battle.

as a follow up, anyone know of anyplace I can go to ride hills in the final weeks? its not really practical for me to get up to the n. shore for rides during the week plus i don't know my way around up there.

i thought about Mt. Misery/Sweet Hollow Road in Farmingdale or maybe Round Swamp, but I haven't been over there yet.

any suggestions?

I'm going Sunday morning. Schedule says 60, 75 and 90 minute Bike sessions followed by optional 30 or 45 swim.

FYI: Wave assignments are up, I am in Wave #8.

I like to ride at SUNY Old Westbusry, the hills are great and there is little to no traffic on the campus. If you're not sure if the hills will be quality enough, take my word for it...or ask 1st Timer, he and I have done some duathlons up there.

Like I mentioned in another thread, if you're looking for more info on TOBAY, stop in at the Runner's Edge, they'll be more than happy to talk to you about it.

My huband and I were there Thursday morning. We did the bike course and the hill is everything we heard and more. It kicked my and we got seperated from the group. (I guess thats why they hand out directions!) The hill is early in the course and I had no idea it was coming. I was in the wrong gear and before I knew it, it was too late to change gears. I was standing, barely pedaling thinking about how I couldnt even unclip and walk if I needed to. The thought of just falling over was way too embarrasing, so I just muscled through it. I highly recommend riding the course if at all possible. We will be there again I think August 7th.

Afterwards, some of the runners edge people said they were going for a swim, but we werent prepared so we met up with some people who have done the race in the past and checked out the run course. On August 7th we think we will be prepared for a swim because it looks pretty easy going. Happy training to all! See ya August 19th!

That's just wrong! That's why I'm going to Practice, I would've thought somebody/anybody would warn you the hill is coming.  Luckily, my sister decided to go with me on Sunday, she's ridden the course before.

Matt:

I'm guessing last night involved some beers, some attractive ladies and a late night? Missed you today.

All:  I went to the TOBAY practice session this morning and rode the bike course 2x and did the run course.  I skipped the swim, since I need so much running help.  All I've got to say is Hills Hills Hills!  I'd strongly recommend trying to check out the course before the race, just to see what awaits you. Or, get some hill repeats in, maybe Old Westbury? I did manage to make it up Moore's Hill both times and I am a Super Clyde carrying a lot of baggage, so if you trained I don't see the hill as a problem.  Just slow going.  There are at least 2 other (longer) gradual climbs, but the last 3 miles, or so, of the course are mostly downhill or flat.  Try spinning the lactic acid out in this section in preparation for the run.  Speaking of the run, it's no picnic either.  Starts out flat, then heads uphill for close to a mile.  Second half of run is almost completely downhill.  I attached some -poor quality YouTube videos of bike course I filmed from my car.  2nd video I ran out of storage so it cuts off abruptly.

Hills Hills Hills!

x2.

1st timer, i think i recognized you from your finish line pic in another thread.

i did one loop on the bike and swam. moore's hill road is a monster, but i made it up, cursing (out loud) most of the way. the rest is no cakewalk either.

its gonna be fun . . .

definitely going to try to make a couple more practices.

had a great time this morning, looking forward to the race more than ever.

Tim: haha, how did you guess??!! It ended up being a later night than I expected, but I'll be at the next few practices, and I'll be there on race day to jockstrap for all the BT'ers.

If anyone wants to get together for a ride during the week let me know. I'd love meet some more training buddies. If we ride Old Westbury we can meet at the Clark Athletic Center. Good luck all!!

I was looking for the 20  yr old Schwinn! I loved when the group leader said we should be in the big ring at least half way up Moore's Hill?!?!  WTF?? I've heard a lot about this hill and was pretty excited for making it up 2x (although I did have to get out of the saddle to do it) and was utilizing my recently added granny gears.  I'm going to try and go again on Sunday..I'll post here if I do and we can make better plans for meeting up.

"rusty bottoms" is what i call her. she's got some life in her yet. though it was good to see some other folks there that weren't competely geared up. there were enough people with older bikes, no clipless pedals, etc., to calm my nerves a bit.

yeah, that sounded odd to me, but i'm a noob so i figured 'what do i know, best to listen to the expert.' i can't for the life of me remember what i did on the hill, i just know i got up it.

that is awesome. well done.

Hey Tim - Thanks for posting that video on YouTube. I was hoping to join you guys for TOBAY, but I missed the cutoff. I'm so bummed ! I wanted to finsh the Pancake Tri in Staten Island before I signed up for Tobay and you know what they say - 1st come 1st Serve !

I hope to catch you guys for a practice session.

Possibly Sunday morning, but I was hoping for an approx. 3hr bike ride on Sunday..and 3 hrs in Oyster Bay I'll only do about 40 miles and my legs will be absolutely cooked at the end because of those hills.  Is it sick that that almost sounds fun?!?!?!  I'll let you know later in the week.

the swim seemed a bit easier tonight. the water was calmer than sunday. also, i doubt it made any real difference, but i liked that the tide was up too . . . . i know we won't have that on a sunday morning, just sayin . . . .

there's something scary about swimming in open water, but at the same time i'm finding it to be one of the most serene things i've done in recent memory.
