Hi all,
Was wondering if anyone has done the Tupper Lake Tinman in upstate NY? I have only seen 1 race report from the race in '04. If anyone has participated I was wondering how well, run / organized the race was and also about the course, hilly ( I assume being in update NY) / flat, etc.

Thanx

Adios
Dave

Dave,

My swimming coach did it last year. I can ask her and report back to you if you like?

I've seen race reports for Tupper Lake Tinman at trinewbies. Try using the search function.

It sounds like an excellent choice.

Dave,

here is the reply I got from my coach.

John-

Any advice will cost you extra…..just kidding!
yes, I did race this one last year as well as the two years prior. It is for sure a hilly course, but it is really well run. Really well. They changed the run course last year and it is now for sure a 13.1 miler if not a wee bit long. It used to be a wee bit short by about ¾ mile. So times last year reflect the new course, hence slower run times compared to the prior year. this is one of my favorite races for half Ironman distances. I love the course being hilly, and they have a really nice barbeque after the race. The year before they did not, and they got a lot of complaints about it. so it is now back on the schedule. (prior year they had coupons for local restaurants – okay, but not as welcomed by participants who forgot their coupon and were really hungry after the race)

And I love being close to Lake Placid. So if your friend wants to do this one, I would highly suggest it. it is well run and a good one to do for a half although hilly. But no severe climbs, just longer sustained ones. And this race fills up pretty quickly, so you should sign up earlier rather than later. I would say sometime in January??

Hope that helps!

Joanna

oh how perceptive you are Deb! LOL Yes, of course there is a story

I did Tupper Lake/ Tinman in '01. We waited to long to make reservations and had huge problems with the owners of the place we got stuck staying at. Long but funny story, I'll tell you next summer. Then off to the race. I thought I could wing it, just muscle my thru since I was not adequately trained. Wrong! 50 minutes in the water, the only person I beat out of the water was a man with one arm.

No problem finding my bike at T1, it was all alone. The bike was 28 out and 28 back. So on the way out I never saw the storm coming up from behind me. It was uuuuugly. I turned around and rode right into it. Huge, torrential down pour all the way back. It was cold, and it hurt. Bike leg took me 3:56. I was pissed.

Got to T2, freezing, soaking wet, and so were my running shoes. I took my chip off, headed over to turn it in, and who was holding the clipboard at the finish line but my husband. I knew he was about to give me grief for dropping out, so I just flashed daggers at him that said "don't even open your mouth." My friend who was with him was much more understanding, even sympathetic.

So that was my one and only DNF. Someday I'm going back to kick its butt.........
