Hi everyone,

I'm a 41 yr. old Mom that has been running for 15 yrs. This year I decided to challenge myself and try a tri. I'm having a tough time figuring out a good schedule that will be effective. I'm looking to do my first race in May. Any suggestions?
My weakness is swimming.

Hello and welcome!! You have come to a good spot for inspiration and questions! This place is great! I suggest looking at the training programs that this site has, I am using the couch to Olympic myself and it is good, but if you have been running for 15 years there are other programs in there for you! I have been running for about 3 weeks now! Anyway welcome and look forward to hearing about your training! Oh yea.. the training logs on this site are a great tool! Jack.

Welcome to the board! This site has some programs and you will find some others with a Google search. You may to to combine two because of your run background. Find one that looks at your level for running and one at level for other two sports and combine them.

hi jaitermom,

nice to see you here. I am also a 40-something mom, will be 41 in a few weeks, but thank goodness my kids are older, 13 and 18.

anyhow, I suggest you get your hands on a copy of Total Immersion. There is some great stuff in there. I would just make sure you can do the distance and then after the race decide what aspects of the race you want to work on. There is so much to the swim leg that you just have to experience to believe. But if you know you can swim the .25 mile or whatever it is you'll do great.

I must admit to being inspired by all of you so call "40 something" parents who have opted to take on the challege of training for tri. Esp. when you have so much on your plate already.

I am in my late twenties with no children and I too strugle to find just the right balance. So my hats are of to all off you.!

There is a great article in this months Inside Trialthon Magazine on how to effectively train with one work out a day, you may want to check that out (as well as some solid swim drills)

Here, here! I'm single with no children, too. I'm inspired by your gumption. Good luck! (and welcome!)

yeah...u can just cut down your running to 2-3 timers per week at the distances u r doing now and then start with the sprint or olympic swim and bike parts...some programs on the main site.  i am sure u could probably still build your running during this or just go on a 'maintenenace' plan and hold your distances while your increasing in swim/bike.

good luck...check in so we can see how your doing...

Welcome to the board Jaitermom. I'm also a 41-year-old mom of boys (keeps me running). There's probably lots of us here. What a strong running background! Best of luck.

First post at this site...but, hey, it is all about trying something new. I'm a 45 YO wife and mother (and retired AF officer) and some friends an I have decided to train for our first MINI tri (300 M swim in a pool, 14 mi bike, 5K run) in March. Our goals are to just finish.

I have a running background so I've been concentrating on the swimming. The surprise is how much I've been enjoying it. I've known how to swim since I was 6 or 7, but I've never tried to swim laps in my life. There is something very Zen-like about reminding myself to slow down and stay aerobic in the swims. Who knew?

It's nice to see I'm not alone in this crazy obsession at my age.
Thanx for the suggestions for total Immersion. Actually, I did aquire a copy from a friend. I have so much to learn. I think I'm going to have to do the program. Did you do it? I was never really a swimmer, so I have alot of "bad habits" to break.

hi again,

I got lucky in regards to the TI program. Once I learned I could not do it in the pool by myself, I found out that my doctor (who is a family friend as well) had been a swim coach in college. She worked with me for a while and finally gave up. On the kicking drills I'd actually go backwards! Then I found a Master's program and dragged my butt there before work. Once in the pool I realized I could not hang with this group! I stayed in one of the unused outside lanes and the lifeguard took me under his wing. He worked on my storke with me and I learned how to roll and how to pull thru the water. While I'll never be a great swimmer, I did reach a point where I could comfortably swim a mile.

ok, that was 2 years ago and I'm sure I am back at square one. I hope that lifeguard is still at the pool!

TriMom, swimming is like riding a bike. Once you learn you'll never forget. Just give yourself time to get back into the groove.

that's good to hear. I am looking forward to getting back into the pool. Hopefully in a week or so I'll be able to rejoin the Y.

Don't forget to ask for help. From family and friends. Depending on the age of your children, I find that early morning work best for me. My wife and kids are asleep when I leave and come back, so to them I didn't sacrifice any family time. My moto is: "Success at the expense of family and friends is really failure."
Welcome and best wishes!
