Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5 am ate a banana for breakfast loaded up the car and headed out.
Event warmup:

Jumped in the water about 10 minutes before the start of my wave.
Swim
  • 16m 34s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

My best swim ever!! Started at the back and inside this time. Swam freestyle the entire way, no breast stroke, doggie paddle or grabbing a kayak. :) Going out to the first buoy on this course is easy with just sighting off the nuclear cooling towers. Hit the turnaround still with the pack. Went a little wide but kept one guy to my left and used the reflection of the sun in the water to my right and stayed fairly straight. Half way through I actually passed someone from the 1st wave :) never did that before. Ended up passing at least 3 people form the wave before me. Rounded the last buoy and cruised into shore. Was expecting to see maybe 19 or 20 minutes for the swim so under 17 was a shock :o
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at all
Transition 1

Comments:

Seemed to take forever. and it did Didn't run all the way out of the water to my bike. Took a little to long mounting by bike at the start.
What would you do differently?:

learn to jump on my bike with shoes clipped in.

Comments:

Started out spinning easily for the first 1.5 miles until I passed all the speed bumps coming out of the park. Ride was uneventfull, passed more people than passed me. Thought I had a flat tire at one point but lucked out. Drank 1 aerobottle of powerbar endurance and a few sips of water from my bottle with 1 shot blok. Tried passing one guy on an uphill, was successfull for a short while but he passed me back after I got stuck behind a mountain bike. Cruised into T2 but almost dismounted too soon since there was a big group of people right before transition.
What would you do differently?:

go with a gel instead of the shot bloks
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Had trouble getting my socks on other than that everything went fine.
What would you do differently?:

try running sockless in training to see if I can handle it?
learn to dismount with shoes on the bike
Run
  • 26m 29s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Went out a little too fast and the heart rate jumped straight into high z4. Since it wasn't as hot as last year I left the fuel belt at transition. Its a rolling course but net downhill for the 1st half so I knew I had to take advantage of it. Walked the aid station at the turnaround grabbed 2 cups of water drank 1 and dumped the other on my head. Ran most of the second half with another guy form the wave in front of me. Really kept my mind off the pain. Started my kick when I hit the grass and finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really
Post race
Warm down:

grabbed some water tried to eat a little pasta and a bannana but the stomach wouldn't have it. Jumped in the lake for a few minutes that felt like heaven :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my weight

I'm the guy who introduced myself when I recognized your BT top.

It looks like you beat me out of the water by a minute, but I caught up a little in the transition. I ended up right behind you on the bike start, but you pulled away from me steadily.

Congrats on the good swim.

Great race, and esp. great swim!  You're really improving in all 3 sports! What a difference in conditions from Napa, huh?!
