Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5 after a poor nights sleep DA@# dog kept barking at something. got coffee and the normal peanut butter and honey sandwich on Wheat
Event warmup:

Walked a bit ran about 1/2 mile then swam to checkout the goggles decided to go with the tinted ones as i could see the bous better.
Swim
  • 18m 22s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started to the left and managed to stay out of the mixmaster almost all the way. this was good as i was not fighting for position but on the first 2 legs i found my self out a ways from the bouy line thus adding distence to the swim. i was Breathing on nearly every stroke but that is what i planned to do. Sighting was good but much too often almost every other stroke this slowed me down.
What would you do differently?:

Sight every 9 to 12 strokes, get closer to the bouys
Transition 1
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

Took the long way around with the bike cost me a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Plan the exit path beforehand.
Bike
  • 52m 45s
  • 15.53 miles
  • 17.66 mile/hr
Comments:

I left the Garmin and had the bike computer set to cadence and distence on the way out and cadence and ave speed on the way back. I rode based on how I felt it was a fun ride I was passed by Dave ffrom the bike shop a mile in and for the next 4 miles we exchanged position several time until he finaly fell back (moral victory for me) I passed several people on the ride this is the forst time i have ever experenced that. the rev X's sure felt fast on the flats and downhills. at about mile 11 one of the woman I was exchanging places with told me i lost a tire I slowed down trying to think about what she ment when 2 more riders pased me one of them telling me my tube fell out. I had the tube stuck under the seat and taped in place with electrical tape the tape got to hot and let go. well after loosing those 3 positions I down shifter to clim and dropped the cahin off the small ring and had to stop to fix it. got passed by 3 more riders but Dave was no where in sight. i closed on the group that had passed me passing 3 of them but at the end of the course i was right behind them going into the sweeping downhill to transition and decided it would be a poor idea to pass. O the dam hill no real big deal I shifted down stood up and cranked my way up.
What would you do differently?:

Secure the tube with duct tape, pay attention when downshifting,
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Good transition took a few seconds to decide how to rack the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on mount and dismount
Run
  • 30m 58s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

this I what hurt me the first half i could not get my legs under me and my left knee was hurting bad it hurts inside the knee joint like something is comming apart. I walked 3 times and got passed alot. At the half way mark I was able to stick to a walkless run and then began to do what I visulized yesterday I picked 2 runners way in front of me and bean racking them down. soon one of the runners a young man in real good shape began to walk and would continue to until the end he was overheated. The second target walked a water stop and that is where I passed him 1/2 mile to go I started picking it up thinking anyone closing on me will have to work for it. 1/4 a mile to go I hear foot steps and as they get closer I hear some kid yelling catch him daddy but nope he not going to catch me today i do just as I planned and sprint to the finish bad knee and all I will not let anyone blow by me againe if they want it they will have to earn it.
What would you do differently?:

Not damage my knee the week of my big race.
Post race
Warm down:

Limped around and drank

What limited your ability to perform faster:

a Damaged left knee

Event comments:

Congrats on a solid race Cliff.  13 minutes is a great improvement, and you should definitely be proud of your accomplishments over the past year.

Take care of that knee!
