Pre-race routine:

Woke up at hotel and had a bagel 3 hours before race time. Good thing I had both sides of bagel with peanut butter. Was only thing I would have to eat for awhile. Met up with some B.Ters and hung out with lovely wife who was also doing the long course. Met up with Kriss, Kelly, Steve, Ben, Jim and Tom. As a side note Tom did an incredible thing for a group doing a relay. Completely selfless act that was incredibly kind. I'll mention it in a later thread.
Event warmup:

Did a short ride and then did a pretty long swim to warm-up.
Swim
  • 15m 47s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was passing quite a few people on the swim and maybe that is why I kept going off course. I would draft for 20-30 seconds and then bump into the feet. So I would go around, maybe I just forgot to correct when going around. Halfway through swim I remembered I forgot to eat powerbar before starting. 3 hours since last food and I had a ways to go. Not good.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to swim in a straighter line.
Transition 1
  • 03m 6s
Comments:

Both transistions really sucked for me. Long run out of water to transition area that was a ways away. Not complaining about the set-up, I just didn't do them well.

Bike
  • 1h 02m 45s
  • 21 miles
  • 20.08 mile/hr
Comments:

Great bike course.
What would you do differently?:

Eat something before hand.
Transition 2
  • 03m 19s
Comments:

This is where I completely lost it. I got into T2 and it's like I lost my mind. I was looking at my shoes and I wasn't sure what to do with them. Evebtually I put down my running shoes and grabbed my socks to put them on.I realized eventually it is very hard to put socks on over bike shoes. Took off bike shoes and put socks and shoes on. It was very strange, I'm not sure why I had such a tough time in T2
What would you do differently?:

Pull my head out of my ass.
Run
  • 49m 54s
  • 5.3 miles
  • 09m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I started this run out feeling pretty good despite the disaster in T2. I went out slower than I thought I could handle because of the not eating anything. I felt really good until about mile 3. The sun and the long day started to take it's toll at this point. I kept up a decent pace but was really hurting because of it. Quds were screaming when I finally finished.
What would you do differently?:

Eat something.
Post race
Warm down:

Got something to eat and drink asap. Met up with some other people I know and watched Kelly(wife) come in. She knocked almost 9 minutes off from her time last year and was rightfully happy.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutrition

Event comments:

I loved this race. The volunteers were unbelievable and everyone was so nice. Water stations and sponges dipped in ice water were great. Kelly and I will make this a regular race on our schedule from now on.

Course: This was a GREAT course. I really liked this bike set-up. It measured a little over 21 miles, more like 21.3. It was changed from the old course due to road construction. As I said though, I really liked this course. Lack of nutrtion was weighing pretty heavily on me most of the ride though. I figured I was going to go 5.5 hours from my last food on a day that was getting pretty warm.

Great job Bryan.  That's weird about your T2 experience.  Agree that this is a fantastic race.  Congrats.

Hey nice going.. socks dont fit to well on bike shoes dude...  lol.    Guess the lack of eating might have be a bigger factor then you might have thought.  Nice overall race though...  I should try this race from the sounds of it...  Regards.

20 MPH + on the bike is a lot easier on functional wheels.

Glad you didn't try to run 5 miles in your bike shoes.

Great race Bryan!  I might agree with Rodger on T2...low blood sugar might have been a factor ...

I'm glad you didn't have any bike issues this race...that would have been a big bummer...21 mph...whoohoo!

Great that you and Kelly could race this together.  I am having a BLAST doing races with my wife this year...

Awesome job!  I am so happy you finally had a good smooth race.  It is probably impossible to do everything perfectly and I am glad the lack of food didn't wreck it for you.  In my limited race experiences, I barely even have a memory of my T2s, so I can only imagine what it felt like after a long bike ride and no food.  And pass on congrats to Kelly too!

Nice race Bryan! You performed well where it mattered - swim, bike and run. I share your frustration with transitions. I keep thinking them that they'll become second nature soon.

Cheers!

Tom

PS - Any chance you rent out those fancy new wheels?

Great race! I'm impressed that you could run strong to the finish with so little food. It was great seeing you & Kelly.  She rocked out there, too! You two are always smiling when I see you and it really helps me relax!

Great job!! Congrats to both you and Kelly on great races! My T2 was highly disappointing as well, so I can relate to that. But overall a great race! Good to see you and Kelly again!

Nice race. T2 can be a mind numbing place. You just finished swimming and biking at race pace...is there any wonder why a person's brain isn't functioning at 100%? That alone is a strong argument for keeping things simple in T2 & doing at few things as possible.

Congrats.
