Is anyone planning on doing the Sanfor Tri in August? My wife got me going on this whole Tri thing and this seemed like an easier one to do for my 1st trip out. Plus it's happening about 5 miles from my parents place and I know the course pretty well (lots of running, rollerblading & biking on the rail trail). My only concern is the swim at this point. All of my training time has been in the pool, and if anyone is familiar with Sanford Lake they know it's dark & very warm.

Either way, I'm looking forward to the challenge. 33 days to go!!

I am considering doing this one.  I wakeboard quite a bit on sanford lake so yes I completly understand the brown water.  Its completly clean, just looks gross.  Being that this is the first year for this venue, it should be a good time and i'm looking forward to it.

Where in Flint are you at? My parents used to live & Flushing & I went to school there. They're now semi-retired up on Sanford (1st fill on West side of lake).

Actually i'm in clio. Grew up over in the thumb.  I've got a friend who lived in sanford growing up so we spend quite a bit of time over on the lake.

I am thinking about doing this as my first triathlon. I'll see how my training goes over the next week or so, and then I'll make up my mind. Swimming is my weakest sport, but I have a wetsuit that I can borrow. If I do decide to do this one, is there anyway to register that is not online?

P.S. I am new here, if you want to read my introduction, you can find it here

This would be my 1st Tri as well. I'm also in the boat of not being too worried about the bike or run, especially on this course (flat as a pancake), but the swim is my concern. I've been trying to hit the pool more often (damn job hunting getting in the way), but am still working at getting a smooth technique that doesn't leave me completely zapped.

Have you ever swam in Sanford? My only concern with using a wetsuit this time of year is that there's a very good chance that the water will be over 80 degrees. In years past, this lake warms up quick and stays pretty warm through the summer. I haven't heard if this race will restrict wetsuits due to water temp.

Good Luck!

As of 7/9, the water temperature at Sanford Lake was 82 degrees. I am pretty sure that they will not restrict wetsuit usage because on the application there is an option to rent a wetsuit. Why would they put that there if they couldn't be used?

As for the course, I have ridden there several times and it's actually flatter than a pancake, some pancakes have little bubbles in them. It's more like, 'flat as a Pepsi that has been sitting in a glass for 5 days! As for the swim, I've been working on it, but I just don't know...

EMail the RD. If ithe water temp is below 78, it's legal. If it's between 78 and 84, it's an RD call as to how to handle it....but...the most common way of handling is it is to let you race, but not record your results....as the USAT won't recognize 'em either.  How weak is that?

However...check with the RD. That's the most sure-fire way of figuring it out. And 3 days out, they should pretty much know.

Will do. I'll post the RD's reply here.

For anyone else who wants to know, I contacted the race director, and he said wetsuits will only be allowed if the water temp is below 78 degrees. Highly unlikely given the high temperatures and extreme lack of clouds that we have had lately.

Being a shallow, brown-water lake, it's going to be bath water for the swim unless some serious rain comes between now & the race.

Just how shallow is Sanford lake?

P.S. I was there the other day and it was just as warm as an indoor pool

At it's deepest point (north of the highway) I don't think it gets any deeper than 20 ft or so. The whole thing is just a dammed portion of the Tittibawasee (sp?) river.

I grew up skiing in Sanford lake. It has always been a brown because it is created by the Dam right there. Sanford is a nice area and the race should be good. I can't swim right now so I am out of it. I wanted this to be my first, but my shoulder is seizing up at 300m. I will be up there for a picnic though

This exact thing happened last weekend at the Legislator. It was 80+ water at 6:00am, then its started to storm. It rained for about and hour, lightning delayed the start by about 15 minutes, and the water temp dropped to wetsuit legal in that span of time.

I'd say to pack the wetsuit if you really want it. I had mine with me.

Also, if the water is dark, you may want to use light tint or clear goggles. Then again, if you are sighting up into the sun, that's not going to help much....

GL to all.

Does anyone have the true official distances for each type of race. Depending on where you look the Olympic race could be 1000 or 1200M, The Sprint could be 500 or 800M. Bike Distances for Olympic and sprint vary also. I know this is not uncommon to have this confusion, but if some one knows please speak up.

Here are the official distances for the Sanford and Sun Triathlon:

Olympic: 1200m swim, 20mi. bike, 5mi. run
Sprint: 500m swim, 10mi. bike, 5k run
Duathlon: 2mi. run, 10mi. bike, 5k run

EDIT: I was swimming there today and it seems like the water may have cooled down a bit. If we get some rain maybe it will be wetsuit legal!

So, who was there? It was my first tri, and loads of fun! The air temp at start sure made that water feel nice! Plus, I was bib number 1 (one). People jokingly asked "Did they fly you in from Kona?"

It was my first, but certainly not even close to my last...

(Oh, and the 80 year old guy who got the 'most experienced athlete award' was my grandpa...)

Hello,

I just spoke with a friend today who ran this. He said the course was good but the race was run very poorly. He paid his fee two months ago and didn't get a shirt or finishing medal. He also said that they didn't have a redundant time keeping system and some one accidentally unplugged the clock before he reached the finish.

I like to get more opinions than one. Did you have any insights on the way the race was managed and whether or not you thing there will be another next year?

I ran it this year and it was my first experience participating, though I've jockstrapped a couple for my wife. Overall, I thought it was ran pretty well. There were plenty of volunteers and they were enthusiastic and helpful. I was a little apprehensive about using an open road course, but it was ran very well, with a lot of help from the Sherrif's deputies. In other races I've seen, motorists tend to react to races a lot better if there are flashing lights around and not just people in bright shirts trying to stop traffic.

As far as your friend's issue, when did he/she get there for packet pick up? We (wife & I) were in line around 6:45am and they still seemed to have plenty.

I didn't hear anything about the clock getting unplugged. Did they still have official times posted on the 3Disciplines website today?

How did everyone finish? I finished 1:31:33. Much better than the 1:45 that I was hoping to beat. My swim was horrible (16:41?!?!?) but I knew I was going to struggle there.

I did the long course and got lost on the run. When you were supposed to turn left to run under the road, there was no one there and I ended up running across the street and then had to run back and go under the bridge. Besides that, I thought it was a good race. It was a bit confusing in the am due to the car back up.

This was my first race...

SWIM :I can't swim too well yet. My swim time was 15:56! (Gotta work on that...)
BIKE: Fat tired, crappy, squeaky mountain bike time was 39:53. (could have done better...)
RUN : I got massive calf cramps that would have reduced me to tears if I hadn't been racing.
my run time was 29:34

My Overall time was 1:26:20

Even though I had my share of problems during the race, I really enjoyed it!

Overall I think I did alright. This was my first tri, I didn't really know what I was doing... I am looking to improve on that A TON over the winter. I hope to do at least 3 tri's next season!

P.S. The Finish clock was unplugged at one point for about 1min.
