Heart of the Lakes Triathlon
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 10m 32s
Overall Rank = 207/
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 16/
Pre-race routine:

Camped overnight with some friends. The campground was very lax on its rules so the all night party cut into restful sleep. The camping is a weekend family activity though so we won't change the camping. I should have known when we arrived - I commented to my friends we were definitely out of place as we weren't sporting a case of beer and a carton of cigarettes - definitely not a triathlon crowd. Note to myself - find a different campground.

Had a cup of coffee, some Naked brand juce, a banana and an oatmeal raisin performance bar.
Event warmup:

Didn't really warm up - road my bike to the transition area and did some stretching. I probably should warm up more.
Swim
  • 08m 25s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim seemed really long to me and I was getting fatigued. I sited well though and didn't have to do alot of extra swimming to get back on track.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe swim longer before I got up to run out of the water.
Transition 1
  • 03m 56s
Comments:

The run up to the bikes was quite long and hard on tender feet. I had to put on my shorts and a running top and my running top got all bunched up and my race number tore off part way.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe I should get a race number belt.
Bike
  • 32m 39s
  • 9 miles
  • 16.54 mile/hr
Comments:

I was happy with my bike even though, as in Mankato, alot of people passed me. I finally figured out how to get air in my tires and having fully inflated tires made a tremendous difference.
What would you do differently?:

I should consider getting road slicks for my bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m 40s
Comments:

My legs were really tight and my hamstrings seemed to be cramping up. I spent some time trying to stretch my legs. This was a really slow transition.
What would you do differently?:

Do more bikes to runs as part of my training. Get speed laces.
Run
  • 22m 54s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 09m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt really slow but the pace was not too bad. The out I went slow. I walked through the water station coming back from the turn around and drand some water. The second half seemed faster and I felt better. There were a couple of guys I was trying to catch but it just wasn't going to happen.
What would you do differently?:

Run more.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank some water and ate a lot of fruit. Stretched my legs - particularily my hamstrings.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall I am happy with my performance. I need to spend more time training and could probably stand to shed a few pounds. I met the time I had set for myself 1:10. The actual time was 1:10.33 but I am going to round the seconds down not up. I also don't think I am mentally tough when things are hard.

Event comments:

This is a fun race - perfect for everyone. It is well organized and runs smoothly. I will sign up to do this race again.

Nice race and welcome to B.T.  Make sure you stop by the Minnesota site once and awhile, we have a great group of people who talk about the local races. Heart of the Lakes is a great venue that many return to year after year.

Do you like the Naked juice? I've thought about trying it, but haven't been brave enough to buy it yet. Looks like you had a decent race. Keep training!
