Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4AM, which was fine since I couldn't sleep anyways. Got ready to go and left the hotel about 4:50. Ate 1.5 min bagels with peanut butter in the car. Got to race found the parking lot we'd scouted out the night before- had a great spot! Filled tires and made our way to the T-area. Got to my transition and everyone on my rack looked REALLY fast!! Everyone had race wheels, team jerseys, the works- I started feeling slow! Moving on again, everything was really smooth, set up my T-area, got chip, stared blankly around the are looking for people and finally took the bus over to the swim start. It was funny to be on a school bus with lots of topless men and people in spandex!
Event warmup:

Sat around the start for about an hour talking to a bunch of people. The race was delayed a bit b/c TDOT was still setting up the bike course. It was a little boring, but not a huge deal. Stretched a little while waiting.

Comments:

An interesting swim for me. I don't think I like the TT start as much. We lined up by race number, slid into the water about 10 people at a time, then started about 3 seconds apart. I didn't really know I was supposed to go when they sent me off. I kinda hung on to the dock for a few seconds...I'm sure I messed up the rotation! Overall, my swim felt good. I kept looking for that current that was supposed to be in the river, but always felt like I was just swimming in a lake. I had a pretty easy timing passing when I needed to and felt like I passes a lot of people. I guess the worst part was that the water felt a little choppy going under the last bridge...was it going upstream now?? Not a huge deal, but it wasn't as easy as everyone said it would be.
What would you do differently?:

I think I need to push it harder on the swim at races- my pace could have been faster. I think I just take it easy since it's easy for me. I always get out thinking I could have gone faster.
Transition 1
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Got to T1 before most of my (fast looking girl)rack..happy with that! This was a pretty good T1 time too, so I'm satisfied.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on transitions.
Bike
  • 1h 26m 38s

  • 17.21 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a tough course!! It felt like the hills would never end! I think the worst one was mile 4-5...it seriously felt like a 20:00 climb. None of the hills were steep, but they kept going and going- like the Energizer bunny! I'm actually glad that I didn't drive the course ahead of time, I wouldn't have wanted to know. Overall the ride felt pretty good. It was hard, so I don't think I had the average I'd wanted, but that's ok. I didn't feel like I got passed by too many women. At the halfway turnaround, I thought I'd be able to speed up a lot with the down hills, but there was a nasty headwind- dammit!!! I think I was going about 15 mph and just couldn't get any faster- downhill!! Just kept checking off the miles and was happy to see downtown ahead. Needless to say, I was pretty glad to be finished with the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure. I felt like I was pretty steady the whole time. I guess I'd just push it a little harder. I'd be more diligent with my food and drink intake...I know I didn't take enough in.
Transition 2
  • 55m 2s
Comments:

I've been wanting to consistently keep T2 under 1:00...and I did that.
Run
  • 1h 01m 3s

Comments:

I loved this run! I would totally run here if I lived in Chattanooga! Felt pretty strong off the bike, I knew I had enough time to finish my race to keep my goal time. I also wanted to run the entire way- I didn't do that in my last Olympic. Settled into a nice pace within about 5min of start and just tried to keep it going. Course had stairs that you had to climb at about .5 mi- had to slow a little going up since I was behind an older man. Picked up the pace again at the top. The next surprise was icy cold towels around mile 1- AWESOME!!! I guess the hardes part of this race was mile 3. I kept looking for Kraig and not seeing him- finally he passed me about .5 before the turnaround and I got another little boost. Kept seeing more people the second half of the run and just kept chugging along. I reminded myself that I'd run the whole way and just a little longer to the finish!! Grabbed another towel at mile 5-ish, back down the stairs, and then up a steep but short hill. I actually walked on this hill. I do think I was walking as fast as I would have run though. Started back running at the top of the hill and the finish line was about .25. It was cool to start hearing everyoe cheering. Saw Elena and she was yelling at me to run faster! I was laughing and trying to push it a little harder- well mainly I was laughing! Finished, very happy with my time and how the race went overall!
What would you do differently?:

I can always work on my run, so I'll just keep up with that. I'd consider running up that darn hill next time!
Post race
Warm down:

Found Kraig, talked about our races, hung out at the NAMC tent, cheered for everyone else, drank free beer, took at 'bath' in the fountain with Heather, Neal, Kirk, Kraig and Leslie!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing external. The course was tough, but a great challenge!

Event comments:

I love a flat course and all, but I'd do this race again for the challenge. I think Team Magic does a great job and I liked the run portion. Maybe next year, we'll have some downstream current and no headwind on the bike.

You did AWESOME!! I'm so excited for you, you killed your goal for this race and it was definately a tough course. You are getting faster and faster, your training is definately paying off!

It was fun being rednecks in the fountain after the race - especially you with your plastic cup of beer.

great race, keep the good attitude about the heat and the hills. That short steep hill just before the last Arctic Zone stop got me too
