Greetings! I signed up for this race as my first HIM. Has any BTer done this race before? Any advice?

The Big Kahuna will be my first HIM, too. My boyfriend did it last year and really enjoyed it. He's away on travel just now but I can drop him an email asking if he has any advice.. Apparently the bike and the run are both fairly flat. You end up running on the beach toward the end, though, which is... less than ideal.

Just talked to the boyfriend, he said it can get chilly on the bike ride. Arm warmers are recommended, and possibly leg warmers as well. The bike does have rolling hills--nothing terribly steep, but several rollers. Hope this helps!

They took a while to process my registration--about a week and a half, and I did it online. I'd give 'em at least a couple of weeks on a paper check before you get worried.

Yay! It'll be my first HIM as well!! Bike course does look mild... part of the reason I chose it. Anyone else freaked about ocean swimming at a beginner surf spot? Hope to see some of you there!!

Great to see there are so many of us first timers! My training for this has been up and down. I have had some awesome weeks, where I thought I was ready for the race that week and then others like this where I feel as though I made a BIG mistake signing up. Hope everone has a great last couple weeks of hard training before Tapering. How has your training gone?

BTW where is everyone staying for the weekend? Since my race application finally processed I need to begin my search for a hotel.

YES! Me too. This week started out as one of those "yes, I can do this!" weeks, but has turned into "uhhhh, what did I get myself into?" I'm just hoping that the big race falls in one of those positive weeks! Where I am: longest OWS 1.2 mi, longest bike 30 mi (will up that to 45ish this week), longest run 12 mi (should go up to 15.5 on the 18th)

BTW where is everyone staying for the weekend? Since my race application finally processed I need to begin my search for a hotel. Richard

I live about an hour away, so I might just sleep at home. Alternatively, my grandmother lives in Santa Cruz about 5-10 minutes away from the race site, so I could stay overnight with her. I'm doing that for a race in Aptos (a little ways south of Santa Cruz) this weekend.

As for swimming in a surf spot, it's not so bad. We do the same for the Sandman tri (my race this weekend). If you duck your head and dive/swim straight into the wave before it breaks, you aren't too affected by it. Pretty soon you're through the breakers and just have to deal with swells. Do you live near the ocean? Is there any way you could get out to the beach and practice swimming through the waves? I'd highly recommend it if you can, even if it's just the day before the race. I bet we could get a small group together to go practice before or after packet pickup.

Now, that would be nice! I'd totally be down for that! As it is, I live a good 2+ hours from the ocean, and I'm terrified of going alone. Any takers??

I'm in, obviously, and can probably get the bf (who will be doing the race as well) to join us. How about you out-of-towners?

oh yeah, let me know too if you all end up putting together a swim the day before.

I ended up getting a hotel at the econo lodge.  Relatively cheap and close.

Ah, that's a great idea, but I'm booked, but quite coincidentally in Santa Cruz.  I'm doing the Tour d'Organics Santa Cruz ride that day.   Have fun!

Yay!! Ok, I was thinking meet up sometime in the morning at Cowell's Beach (swim spot). Practice swimming out/in through the breakers until my arms have frozen off (sleeveless suit!!). Then either ride from there, or park just out of town on Hwy 1 (to avoid traffic lights, etc). Let me know what you think - and what time you'd like to meet.

Hey! I will be there-but with a different group. Let me know when you guys are there and I'll see I can catch up with you guys

I did the ride over the weekend--it was interesting.  I had a bunch of self inflicted injuries.  But I had fun!

Thanks for the report on the ride! It sounds like we may have a tailwind coming back into town which would be nice to start the run with fresh legs and for your sake I hope the flat tire gods leave you alone on race day.

As for my training I am making today a rest day and then have 10 tough days of training (have to cram) before the final taper. Best of luck in these final weeks everyone and I look forward to meeting yall.

I think it would probably work best for us to start by 8am... does that work for you? Where will you be staying?
