Extreme Veteran 381 Peoria, Arizona | Subject: Ironman Wisconsin Okay, the race is 7 weeks from today. So, I thought I would get the thread started. How's everyone's training going? Who are first time IM competitors, and who are multiple IM competitors? As for me: Training is going well in spite of trying to train and study for the IL bar exam (it is Tuesday and Wednesday of this week). It will be real nice once I am back from Chicago on Thursday night and can get to FULLY concentrating on training and getting ready for the race. This will be my first IM. I have done numerous sprints, a few Olys and one 1/2 IM. I know I absolutely enjoy IM training - I just hope I enjoy the race 1/2 as much - if I do IM-Moo '07 will be the first of many IMs. Keep training, stay positive, and good health and enjoyment in training and racing to ALL! - Tim Edited by SwmBkRn 2007-07-22 9:35 AM |

Pro 4675 Wisconsin near the Twin Cities metro | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin Training is going pretty well. Just finished Spirit of Racine today (4:37:31, PR by 8:47) as a tuneup race and will do Pigman HIM 3 weeks before IM WI. This will be my 2nd IM (did WI in '06). Just got a new Felt DA a week ago and will need to log a lot of miles to get accustomed to the new bike. Starting tomorrow I spend 2 full weeks on business travel so it will be a challenge to keep focused on training. At least I'll have my bike and Tacx Flow trainer with me to use in the hotel. Hope everyone's training goes well in the next few weeks. |

Iron Donkey 38643 , Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin Great job at Racine, Birkie! That was my first Tri ever, and it was a terrific race! All I cared about was beating the cutoffs (1), and finishing (2), anything else after that was topping. I can tell you one thing, I REALLY need to swim. I had cramps and was passed by almost the other final 2 - 3 waves because I never practiced swimming. Luckily I had a decent bike and run. Good luck. Iron Donkey 38643 , Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin Well, I did my first marathon this year, and did my first Tri, ever, yesterday at Racine (1/2 Tri). Yep, never did a sprint or Oly. Stupid, huh? Now, I'm hitting the training hard for IMWI (I must be really stupid). As you stated below, stay positive, healthy, and HAPPY TRAINING! Good luck to those competing in IMWI! Bob 2194 Binghamton, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin I can't believe how fast the summer is going. 3 weeks of hard work and 3 weeks of taper to go. I did my first marathon in May, my first olympic in June, my first HIM in July and am psyched as hell about my first Ironman!! Training is going great!! Really trying to get the nutrition plan in place. It worked out great in the HIM last weekend. My legs were completely fresh coming off the bike. I actually PR'd my 1/2 mary during the HIM!! Keep up the great work everyone!! Train hard but train smart!! |

Member 37 Madison, WI | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin This will be our first IM for both of us! We're both very excited for the day to just get here... Training for us is going really well. Yeah, we're tired, but the journey has been so much fun and to be able to train with your spouse makes it even more special. We only live 4 blocks from the swim start, we are lucky to be able to train on the IM course any day we want to - Lake Monona for our open water swims, the loop for the bike, and running the downtown/campus area for our runs - you can't beat that. Our training has consisted of several rides of 80-90+ miles, we got our longest run of 3 hours out of the way last weekend (7.22), and we have our longest ride the weekend of 8.11 - our plan is to ride the full IM bike course, we'll see. Then it is onto the taper...I've heard the taper period can be interesting for a couple who trains together, the anxiety and irritability is heightened during this time. Anyone have stories to share about your behavior during the taper? Coming up the weekend of 8.4, we have our 1/2 IM tune up race in Michigan (Steelhead) - we did this race last year and had so much fun, looking forward to being back on a familiar course. Our main focus right now is nailing down our nutrition. Our goal is to finish! We aren't out trying to set any new records. It is all about having fun, seeing friends and family on race day, and seeing what the mind/body can do. See you all at the starting line in 43 days! |

over a barrier | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin That bike course is a killer. Early in July - I rode the out to Verona and one loop then back to Madison. I didn't think the course was that bad. HOWEVER, I did two loops yesterday and it kicked my butt. It was warm with a headwind most of the time but still.... I might be looking at a 7 hr bike split. Yikes! |

Master 1404 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin 40 days!! My training is going well. Just did my second Century and this one was killer.. all relentless hills (~7000 feet of climbing) in the Heat of Georgia. My guess is that Moo's course will not be as bad, or as hot.. I know, I've heard all the horror stories of the heat and the cold, but this year, I'm expecting 75 and mostly cloudy. a man can dream. I have 2 more centuries, and a oly distance race left on the schedule. Did two HIM's in May and June. Pretty close to dialing in Nutrition. This sunday, and the 18th of Aug are two of my longest training days. Then it's taper time.. Anyone care to post what their taper.. or a typical IM taper looks like?

Iron Donkey 38643 , Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin I went started out by the Alliant Energy Center and did the first loop. Over 84 degrees, a slight breeze, and the course was A KILLER!! I felt bad for the guy who was walking his bike back because I didn't have an air pump (luckily he wasn't too far from the main part of Verona). A couple of complaints that I have are: 1). A couple of spots didn't have the pink arrow markings and I had to retrace the route, even though I had the map. 2). The last part of the map which has one coming from Old PB to Whalen (so, why did they not include Cty M in there), and I freaked not knowing the area. 3). Some trash that was left behind by our fellow bicyclists - gu wrappers, water bottle, and a couple of CO2 cartridges. Let's keep it clean out there, please! 4). A kid in a P.O.S. car (he looked no older than 19) stuck his head out of the car, while driving, and called me a "". Luckily I was biking in the other direction on a 4-lane road and didn't come across and yank him out. Obviously thought he was tough. 5). Some guy pulls out from the side of the road in front of me, I had to slow down, and then he continues to drive about 10 m.p.h (or slower). After 30 seconds of this, I yell out "Hey, how about speeding up, please, or move". He pulls over, lets me go, then jack rabbits to get next to me and starts yelling at me "If you don't like it, White Man (he looked like he was part American Indian), then get off the road. I'm spending some time with my kid here" and continues on yelling at me. I yelled back saying that he was the one that pulled out in front of me, and he continued to argue. I pulled over, yelled at him that I already got his license, proceeded to pull out my cell, and told him that I was calling the cops. Boy, did he take off! I called my wife right away and gave her the license just in case there were any other issues later. 6). The woman in a pickup that pulled from the in front of me from the left side (oncoming traffic) to get to a gas station. I yelled at her and gave her a choice word, to which she yelled back and called me an "A**hole". Yep, I'm the A**hole when I almost get run over. You really have to be careful out there. over a barrier | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin Wow, I had the opposite experience this weekend. On Saturday right before Garfoot, I was being passed going uphill by a car at the top of a hill a cop had closed the road due to an accident. I stopped to ask about the accident, the patrol officier said as I approached - don't worry I got the plate of the guy that passed you in the no passing zone. Wow! All the drivers gave me plenty of room. I did notice the pink arrows, they weren't there a few weeks ago, it kind of bothers me someone painted up the road, Ironman North America has asked cyclist not paint up the roads in the area. On Stagecoach, a guy had a water cooler full of 12 oz bottle waters covered in ice in his front yard, a sign said something to the effect " Cyclist its gonna be a hot one today, free water" |

Expert 1002 Wind Lake WI | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin The pink arrows were nice, but should not have been there. The cooler with the ice and h2o was awesome. Planning to do the full course this Saturday- and it looks like it's going to be HOT and HUMID! Still deciding where to park. I'm leaning towards parking at the start of the loop, riding the out and back and then the loops. That way I can use the car as "special needs". However, I'd like to feel the ride back in at the 100 mile mark... decisions...decisions.... Good luck to everyone prepping for Moooo. |

Master 2139 piece o heaven | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin I had an epic training day on Sunday- it went very well. learned a few things - I need more fluid than I consumed, my gel every 25 mins works, endurolytes every 45 mins works, if you drop essential nutrition - stop and get it - you'll be happy later when coming off the bike and feeling real thirsty - DON"T CHUG to catch up - felt a bit off in the stomach on the run I M there TO FINISH - not win or qualify, so pace it out and I will finish After 9hr 15 mins- 8.5 hrs of actual moving - I was still vertical and seeing it is all possible I sadly will not be able to bike or ride the course prior to IMWI, but thanks to all of you for comments on the site for me to read. Iron Donkey 38643 , Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin I'm planning on doing the full bike this coming Sat. Aug. 4. I plan on getting there early in the morning no later than 6:00 a.m. so as to finish by 2:00 p.m. or later (have some plans for the afternoon). I was going to park near the Sheraton across from the Alliant Energy Center and go from there. I biked about a 15 mph average for the first loop (80) miles this past Sat. and hope to improve on that a bit. I took my sweet time, got lost a few times, and felt I had to work hard on the hills. Maybe I'll see you out there and we can cheer each other up!

The statement of being there "TO FINISH" is very true, and that is all I care about since this will be my first IM and 2nd Tri, ever. Looking forward to doing the Elkhart training with you in about 3 weekends.

Pro 3906 Libertyville, IL | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin JayJay - 2007-08-01 9:50 AM I'm almost afraid to ask, but what is the fascination with the donkey? Well, it was a joke between morey1 and myself had calling each other slow azz donkeys in the context of what age groupers are pulling out there. One AM ride as the sun was just deciding to get up, we were on a rural road and hear a guttoral 'EEEAWWWW' from out of the blue from an actual donkey. It was a sign that Team Turbo Donkey was destined to be. The donkey is a perfect mascot for tri too, stubborn and steady. It helps to have a little humor in the process as the hours get long too and being able to go through the IM training process with my fellow donkeys who will be doing MOO: TriDDS, PeterAK, Pseudoyams, and Firstnet911. So thats the donkey fascination in a nutshell. We are all part of one donkey lovin' team and BT freaks. There are about two dozen of us now. |
