bryancd - 2007-07-26 10:38 AM You've got 2 months to get there. If you can swim 1500 meters in a wet suit, you can swim 1500 meters without one. They don't provide THAT much more bouyancy, you can do it, just take it slow. Go out to Saguaro and swim out to one bouy and back w/out it. Then try to swim along the beach in the shallow water. Baby steps.

So more easily said that done!! I have been taking baby steps for a year, and have come a LONG way, but I am not sure I am ready yet.  Like I said, if I work hard and swallow some helium balloons just before the race, I MIGHT be able to do it. But the physical part is just one piece.  I have lots of water issues.  I have come a long way with those as well, but still a ways to go.  Heck...there wasn't ONE kyaker at Mountain Man. If you were struggling you were on your own.  I would have died there for sure without my WS!

Christina....I would be happy to go out with you sometime.  You should just join us on a thursday night!! Or does it have to be a weekend so you BF can be there too?

He he I think it would be GREAT to wear a wetsuit at a non-wetsuit legal swim. I too found ti interesting that the Timex site said "THIS WILL BE A WETSUIT LEGAL SWIM" I mean if they SAY that then how can they go back on their word, but why would they make that statement in the first place? If they were following USAT rules they would say (like most races) 'the ruling will be made day of.' It seems like they are planning to let people do it no matter what - which is odd.

I just sent an email to the race dirrector pointing out that the website should not say that if they are going to call it on race morning.  I said they should say it SHOULD be a ws legal race, but per USAT rules they will call it the morning of.  We'll see what he says back.

I am going to get out of work early one of these days so I can go swim with y'all! My work is actually really flexible and they wouldn't mind, it's just that the project schedule has been crazy lately and I'd actually feel guilty about not being here.

Z works in Tucson (if anyone reading this is from there, he is the service manager at Trek Bikes of Tucson and would be glad to help you with anything), but he is around on some Thursdays so I can coordinate with him! He will do almost anything for free alcohol. If he's not around I will just suck it up and swim near the shore...

Yes! I want to do an IM before I am 40 which gives me 7 years

I like to ease into things, which is why it will have taken a year of sprints before I step up to an OLY. Baby steps for me but I admire all you aspiring IMers and half-IMers

Out of our group, hjmiii is already an Ironman, and I think the majority of us have one in our future.  Personally, 2008 will be my year of halves, with 2009 being the Ironman year.

Josh - I am totally impressed with your ambition.  I backed off on trying the 1/2 IM this year for a couple of reasons - the distances would be a stretch for me this year, and I want to compare my times from last year to this year.  I admire your commitment to doing the distance so soon!

When I started tri's a few months ago and watched the full IM I said "NEVER!" How quickly things change. I hope to do SOMA half next year and MAYBE, BIG MAYBE, full IMAZ in 09. We shall see. At least I am pondering the thought of a full now.

Crossing my fingers that I can avoid injuries, but I am hoping to do the Soma 1/2 next year, and maybe a full IM by '10 (before my 40th would be nice).

I wish I had got into this whole Tri thing before having kids. I think that is my biggest reason for not doing an IM anytime soon- I feel guilty already about taking time away from the family to train. IM just seems an overwhelming commitment just now.

But I really enjoy watching other people's journey to IM

Can't speak to the kids issue, but I wish I had started before I had a career.  I think back to school and how much time I could have spent training!

I was thinking a 1/2 was in my future this year until the back injury.  Now, I'm just happy to be training for an Oly.

I think a 1/2 is more than doable for Josh.  The swim is only a couple hundred more than an Oly, and he swims the distance at our OWS's all the time.  Then there's the bike....well, he can definitely do that.  The run is double an Oly, and there's nothing that say's he can't WALK part of it if he has any problems (which I don't think will happen because knowing him, he'll work on that).

He wasn't exactly weak on last races' run anyway.  He looked great and even said he felt awesome.

I think he's doing the right thing.  He's got a nice challenge ahead of him; but it's a NICE challenge and not an overbearing challenge.

Oh!  Did I accidentally give you false hope that YOU could do it too?  ROFLMAO!!!  I slay me!

Well hell yea Missy!  You could do it, and I thought you would when Josh jumped in.

1. The swim isn't an issue for you

2. You biked with Astrid and Tanya on the race, and I know you're a biker and always ride with Josh.  You might not have his speed (I haven't looked so I'm only guessing), but you have the endurance.

3.  You two finished the run with the EXACT same time (even down to the second.  That weirded me out.  You two are joined at the hip or something).  And look how you were jumping around, goofing off at the finish.

I just haven't said anything to you because you didn't show a WANT to do it right now.  Maybe you won't, maybe it's something you'll feel the need to do later.  Who knows?

We all do this for fun.  Why do a race or distance you just don't feel motivated to do?  Could you do it? Yes.  But I say only do it if it's calling you, taunting you; standing topless in the water, nipples erect, begging you to come out and.... OH God!

Well, just do it if you want to.

You slay me too! Unfortunately SOMA half is not half naked, nipples erect for me right now. I am happy to try and better my time at the Oly distance. Josh has the naked fantasies about the half, not me. Its not my time for that...I know deep down I could (heck we all could because we are dedicated to our training and strong willed enough to haul our bodies over the finish) BUT its not my time -

I am STOKED to watch those who compete in races of all distances -

Oh yeah and my new goal since Josh is not competing in Quarter is to BEAT CHRIS! WOOT!!! Kidding, glad you will just be able to compete!

I don't care what or who is standing out in the lake naked with nipples erect waiting for me for a little skinny dipping action....if I had to go out into nasty Saguaro lake to get it, I would have to say Hell No!

Wow, such lofty goals Jen. LOL!

I agree with you.  It's not a question of "could you do it".   Just do what makes this stuff fun for you.  If you didn't want to do the distance and trained for it, there's a chance  you won't want to do this sport after that.  And we don't want that.
