Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 88/169
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at the crack of stupid, got lat minute stuff ready, had breakfast -wheat free waffles and grapefruit w/ Heed. Family was taking picures and we headed down in a cab to the race site.
Event warmup:

Well -unintended warm up run from transition to swim start due to missing cap on my handlebars. Some assisted stretching e/ massage folks in the corrals (nice)
Swim
  • 24m 45s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 39s / 100 meters
Comments:

More open water practice especially sighting and navigation. Was suprised how far off course I ended up about 1/4 of the way through. Overall I felt strong but did have a moment of anxiety when I realized I was on the rocks but pulled it together for the last part of the swim and finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

More OWS! More Master classes
Transition 1
  • 07m 13s
Comments:

Overall pretty quick
What would you do differently?:

Bring towel to set stuff on
Bike
  • 1h 36m 57s
  • 24 miles
  • 14.85 mile/hr
Comments:

Oh - and AMEN for the Gotham Bike guys who stopped me at mile one to fill my tires as I didn't have time to do this myself before the race due to my handlebar cap emergency. They saved the day - I am forever a Gotham Bike customer!
What would you do differently?:

More bike practice and get on those clipless pedals -imagine how much better my time would have been w/ them!
Transition 2
  • 03m 57s
Comments:

Ha - made up time by not having biking shoes here -helmet off, visor on, gel in, number on -a quick potty break and go!
What would you do differently?:

Will have to have agame plan from bike shoes next race!
Run
  • 56m 9s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Really tough coming out of transition -started to think I might have to walk a oportion of the run, but gel kicked in around mile 2 and I was set for the rest of the race. Felt weker thatn expected but the bike kicked my red bike! My pace was much faster than expected w/ my sore hammy and all -woohoo!
What would you do differently?:

Take gel before getting off the bike so it kicks in sooner
Post race
Warm down:

Walked aound the post race activities and walked back to transition which really heped loosen up the legs!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just experience I think -it was my first tri after all

Event comments:

This was an amazing race, very well organized and attended. All participant I met were graciou encouraging and just great to be around. I love this sport, I love these people, I can't wait to race again next year!

Great Report. I feel kind of bad that in all the advice i gave you i never mentioned anything about timing on nutrition or the towel or other little transition things. But wasn't it neat to see all the different personalized set ups for transition to the bike? Gu's taped to the top tube, Power bar globs stuck to the top tube. extra tubes tabed to the seat post, bento boxes etc etc.
