Subject: Need Bike Shipping advice!

Hey everyone - I have heard from a few people that using DHL or FedEx is a cheaper, safer, and better option than checking my bike box on the plane.  Frontier charges $50 each way, but I'm always leary about the baggage guys tossing it around.  Anyone have any idea about the other methods?  how much does a typical hard shell bike box with a tri bike weight even??  Stories - good, bad, anything will help!

thanks -

I've loaded my bike box with everything under the sun and it was MAX 55 lbs.

I have traveled numerous times on planes with my bike box and it's even been put on the conveyer belt and came to a slamming thud as it slid down.  My bike was fine!  Sending it UPS/DHL/etc is less hassle, and you can get insurance on it.  Being on the plane, I believe they are only liable for like $5/lb.  You do the math.

You're problem come in with TSA.  Make sure you stand there and watch them take it through security.  If they have to open it, watch them and make sure they repack it properly.  THEN you lock it!  I personally lock it and then if they ask me to unlock it, I do.

$100 round trip is pretty good actually.  That's the cheapest I've seen.

Do you have to make advance arrangements for taking the bike on the plane?  Or just show up with it all packed?  I just bought a serfas bike armour case and am flying w/ my bike next week.  i'm quite nervous about it!

Going to Florida, UPS, DHL, FedEx were MUCH more expensive than taking it on the plane.

Just take it with you and check it with your luggage.

Koala,
I've never had an issue and never "called ahead" to tell them I was bringing a bike box.

Also, a lot of the races have a sponsored group that will ship and have your bike ready for the races. When you balance everything, it's a lot easier that way. Bike is ready for you when you get there, just make sure you write down all your measurement down if you had it fitted, so that all fits the same when you get to the race. Then the ship it back to you. Great deal.

I ship bikes with Fedex Ground all the time. It shouldn't cost more than $40 and it should take about 3 days to get there. I just shipped a heavy mountain bike from Texas to Ohio where the total shipping weight was almost 40 lbs, and it cost me about $40, and that was with $1500 insurance.

Also, in my experience Fedex Ground is much cheaper than UPS.
