kimj81 - 2004-10-06 2:18 PM What's the difference between a single speed and fixed gear?

On a single speed you can coast. On a fixed gear, there is no freewheel mechanism, the rear cog is attached directly to the hub.. If the wheel is turning, the pedals are too. No coasting allowed.

It make you strong.....like owl, and smart......like ox.

Ugh. I think I'd do a lot of riding with my legs out to the side... going "wheeeee!!!!" down all the hills. Sounds like a pain in the arse!

IĀ have a lovely Look 386 carbon frame, forks & seatpostĀ built up with Ultegra, which is my pride and joy. My winter training bike will be my old Trek 1000 with mudguards....I have a Specialized Stumpjumper FS mtb so hope to get some mud time over the winter!

It can quite literally be a pain in the arse.....

I forgot to mention the whole no brakes thing ..... but that's another matter (word, I do actually run a front brake on mine)

The downhills are really the hardest part

No brakes?! Are you just supposed to slow it down by muscling the pedals to a stop? So, why don't they put brakes on it? Is it really that hard?

I DO run a brake on mine, but not all fixed riders do. On the flats, your legs do more of the stopping than the brake does anyway, so rear brake is redundant. But because I ride on substantial hills I like being able to feather my speed a little to give my legs a bit more of a rest. Here's an article about the whole "No brakes on the street" deal. I'm not too sure I buy into it, but I'm probably just too much of a weenie.

you go girl! how do you like the kona? i am still thinking about doing some cyclocross at some point and really thought about getting a cross bike instead of a road bike.

I love the CX bike. It gets the most miles of any of my bikes. I treat it a lot like a mountain bike, and ride it on local trails. It's always fun to come up to mountain bikers that are standing on top of a hill looking down with a worried look, and simply say "on your left" as I cruise down the hill on my rigid CX with skinny knobbies and drop bars. I get a lot of funny looks when riding that bike in the dirt. I don't do a whole lot of road biking with it, since I'm not a fan of the road. Training for the tri is the most road riding I've ever done with it, and it's not much. But the CX bike is the most versatile bike I own.
